My exhaust adventure...a recap of my setups and some video clips

I believe my exhaust adventure has come to an end. I am always a bit obsessed with the ‘right’ exhaust, regardless of the vehicle/motorcycle I am driving. I typically like the exhaust to be a bit on the loud/obnoxious side with a good tone. My adventure with the FRS was as follows.

1 – Stock

2 – Took off the stock muffler – yes I ran this way for a few hundred miles and enjoyed it, nice deep sound.

3 – Manzo V2 catback – loved this setup, it’s a big 2.75” ID pipe and gave a deep tone. Never too loud. Didn’t have any character to it…no rumble here

4 – Tomei UEL Header, Tomei Overpipe, Stock Front pipe, Manzo catback Added an OFT flash as well! – very loud, lots of ‘rumble’, cold start was too loud and anything 65+MPH was too much drone, car sounded deep and mean…loved this setup, may be my favorite setup for sound.

5 – Tomei UEL Header, Tomei Overpipe, CNT 2.5” Front pipe with a high flow cat, Manzo catback – even louder than before, cold start was unbearable, especially if it was actually cold outside. Rasp started to sneak in, above 3K RPMs and then it was almost embarrassing, sounding. Drone was slightly reduced…which was interesting. As if the noise was more outside the car, than with the stock Front Pipe – this was my LEAST favorite exhaust setup

6 - Tomei UEL Header, Tomei Overpipe, CNT 2.5” Front pipe with a high flow cat, and a PTS catback system (Looks similar to the Magnaflow/Q300 setup) - after exhaust setup #6, this was both a relief and a bit of a let-down…let me elaborate. The car, to me, was almost silent on the first start up. Cold start is muted. Driving around is very quiet inside the car, but actually has some nice volume outside the car (drone is almost completely gone). The ‘rumble’ noise is more pronounced than ever now. I love having a loud car and the noise this car made, but this exhaust setup makes the most sense as it is much more quiet than before. Car certainly ‘feels’ fastest with status 5/6, I think the front pipe made a nice difference.

Overall, just wanted to share my experience. If I could do it again, I think I would have kept setup 5 and tried to add in a big resonator somehow. I loved the volume and just wanted to kill the awful rasp. Setup 6 sounds very mature, in my opinion and a state inspection should be a breeze now. I have shared various videos before. Below are two videos, of setup #6…a drive away video and a warm rev. For when I want loud, I have a new FZ09 with a full exhaust/no baffle.

Quick update here....I am going to keep running this exhaust for another few hundred miles and post a video clip. It seems to be getting a bit louder, which is making me hopeful its going to settle right where I want it to.

I will also update in a few months when frigid temps hit, here in New England...cold startup is just too brutal with certain exhaust setups.
