One of us... one of us...google goggle one of us
Alright, after lurking on here for a long time, then joining and asking all sorts of questions, I finally jumped in and bought a brand new, beautiful 2017 Toyota 86 manual in hot lava. I've had it for almost a month and I'm just about to pass the 1000 mile break in. I should have posted earlier but I've been having too much fun in my new car! It came with all weather mats, wheel locks, rear bumper appliqué, and I added foglights.
I'm 40 and never had a new car before, so this is an experience. I wanted to treat myself after good health news and 15 years of my Integra. My impressions so far: --> It really is the closest thing to a modern Integra there is today. Low profile, great handling, great shifter. I can't help but smile while zipping around curves! The only thing I miss is the added functionality my hatchback has. Everyone was always amazed at the cargo room it has when I fold down the seats and open up the hatch. The 86 probably won't fit my bike. It is much faster and better in every other way, though. --> A very comfortable car. Seat support, driving position, head room, leg room: all of these things are better than I thought. I actually like to feel the road, so a rough ride over bumps makes me feel alive. But I always feel planted and in control. --> I'm not missing the interior Special Edition features that I thought I really wanted. The fit and finish looks luxurious. And I'm digging the analog dials and gauges. The simplicity is actually quite beautiful. --> As for the exterior SE features, I'm glad I got the fog lights. They really make it classy looking, and are actually quite functional by lighting up a different area of the road. I thought I really wanted the spoiler and was planning on getting one soon, but now I think the naked trunk stays as it is. I'm afraid the wing will look excessive and hide the beautiful curves. I think I will add the aerodynamic underbody panels for drag and noise reduction, though. --> It's funny how reading other people's comments can influence your expectations, but then you learn that you just disagree. Most people seem to think the radio sucks, but I've been thoroughly enjoying it. I think the sound is quite good and I've had no problems with my iPhone. I came prepared to hate it but was proven wrong. I also expected to scrape bottom at every driveway and carefully inched my way towards them. It hasn't been an issue and clearance is fine. I also thought it would be tail-happy and whipping out and every high speed turn. I don't know how fast you people are driving but it has stuck like glue for me so far! Maybe I need to open it up a little more! Ha ha! --> Perhaps it's because I'm getting more comfortable in it, but it seems to me that the engine and stick feel much better at the end of this break in than at the beginning. I've never broken in a car before so I'm surprised at the difference. Things feel smoother, quieter, even peppier. Glad to join the club! Myriad |

I used to have a 1999 Integra GSR that I owned at the same time as my FRS. I couldn't believe how similar the 2 cars were. I really wish the 86 had a hatchback option as well. I also preferred the Integra's linear powerband over the 86's. I definitely don't miss the understeer from the Integra though. The more time you spend driving the 86, the more you will fall in love with it. I've had mine for over 3 years and it is easily the funnest car I have ever owned.

The Artist "Perturbator" has an album named "The Uncanny Valley".
On this album, there is a song named "Souls at Zero". At the end of the song, at around 5:38, this line is repeated and it nicely finishes the whole song. The song is worth a listen to, but yeah, I really dig that scene. [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klwBY_c3zAo"]Perturbator "Souls at Zero (feat. Astronoid)" ["The Uncanny Valley" - 2016] - YouTube[/ame] Also, the history of that quote and movie is really extremely interesting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freaks I know this is super random...but its a really neat rabbit hole to go down. And of course TCoat was able to find a sweet GIF of it lol. |

Great post I love driving this car on most days then my C5 just the lightness and quickness make it fun in everyday driving.
Yeah the MY17 radio is not bad at all. Lacks navigation but who doesn't own a smartphone. Very low on my priority list of mods to change.

There aren't too many left on the road anymore that aren't beat to hell, and they are all driven by kids as their first car, not a guy in his mid life crisis. Mine looks pretty darn clean though, and only another 2 years for classic plates in Pennsylvania. It was time for an 86 to become my daily driver. I better update my profile! Myriad |

I don't own an smartphone. Never have but I won't be foolish and say I never will. They certainly are incredibly powerful tools for acquiring information while on the road.

Years ago when I worked in television I did a story about a kid who was born without the lower half of his body but marched on his hands in his high school marching band. He played drums. The weird thing was that he looked exactly like Johnny Eck, the "half boy" in Freaks. It wasn't just that they had the same birth defect, but their faces were almost identical.
Johnny Eck actually had a twin brother, Bobby, who didn't have the same condition. They were in a magic show where Bobby would walk out on stage and be sawed in half in a box, but the illusion would substitute Johnny for Bobby's top half. Then Johnny would jump out of the box and go running around the theater on his hands while the women screamed and fainted. |
