You nailed the pedal dance, though. Now you can just go hoon when you're bored.

I so want to go try it in the hills tonight, but I've had a couple adult beverages, so out of the question. But I might go out to the garage just to do the dance a couple more times.

That would be a huge red flag for me. I think these are pretty universal principles.

A qualified engineering candidate would immediately recognize the question as a test for the grasp of a couple basic thermodynamic principles. Folks that have the courage to banter, especially with authority, are also my biggest stars. I'm a sucker for irreverence but in a professional setting, context and tact are equally important.
My first impression was the room door was open, then I realized you likely meant the fridge door... At which point I decided to clarify. A lot of people might even take this line of thought and not notice that first read.

I've seen people lose big money from applying conversational context to a product requirement. Though I can see the validity if it is stated as an assumption in an answer, where the answer has value only in context of an interview. Beyond that, I have to fall back on differences in industry. My role deals a lot with how people interact with the stuff we're building, which is often not how engineering textbooks might go. Psychology textbooks may help analyse the result after the fact, but it takes a different kind of empathy to just get it.

As a user, I would say, who cares about the room. I'd be sitting in front of the fan.

The Heinlein reference is probably too obscure... And it was thoroughly tongue in cheek because the question had been answered in a way that garnered no objections, and because we're in random. It was also legitimately my third thought, and I'm good at not discarding the mental steps I go through without directing... Which is very helpful for some of what I do.

Then again, I'm not always the best first impression, and my social skills aren't the best.

Its probably good I didn't pursue a more traditional field. I'd probably get myself in trouble more than I do here. Now I just feel a bit sad.

See that's wisdom right there.

That guy with the 17 is wrong, btw. Just because it lets you get out of shape doesn't mean it's not doing anything. Even with the long button press, it's still smoothing out your throttle input. So annoying.

lol

I'm a lot more forgiving in real life. Tcoat gets it. As long as the candidate demonstrates the basic understanding, which is NOT a given, it's really a vehicle for sparking more conversation.

Yeah, and I just forget people don't automatically follow my thoughts. Legitimate issue for me, and I am most successful when I work with people willing to stop me and ask for the map.

Also, the average temperature would still go up. Fan and compressor motors, blah blah. But it'd be comfy in front of the fan for a while.

I'm not even trained as a software engineer, though my job title says I am one...

Believe me, there is nothing glorious about my job. Basically application and systems support. I needed the gig when I moved to Portland and I ended up really enjoying it. Here I am 10 years later. Fuck it. No complaints.

That's a huge pet peeve of mine. The whole don't talk money right away thing. At some point during the interview (which is a two-way street arguably favoring one side or the other depending on the market) the interviewee is going want to know what they get out of the deal (mostly the money let's be honest the benefits and perks are just a sideshow even if they're really good). So why are they expected to wait till they think they won the job to ask? That seems to me like a company that thinks they are the only game in town. Unless that is the case it's a huge red flag for me. I always ask about the money, maybe not my first question but sooner rather than later. Then again I usually have a good idea of what a job pays more-or-less before I even consider a job. Because if you don't know the price you can't afford it type mindset... Also I usually have 3 jobs at a time so even if I lost one I can shop around a bit and still make the bills. This cost me serveral pilot jobs... that I found out later I definitely couldn't afford!

I don't think he agreed with you.
Either way, engineering is not a democracy!

You might win the electrical college, but - in my house, anyone that leaves a fridge door open more than a few seconds gets a whack!
Same for anyone that tries heat exchange in a closed room.

Me - I just stay
