Shoot sorry just saw that. Let us know when u figure the bluetooth thing out. There is a video on YouTube explaining how to do it for the joying headunit. I'm guessing it might be the same

Hopefully they send me a patch that fixes it. Not exactly a deal breaker for me, but I like the cool factor of having gauges on the HU.

It would be nice to have a group buy. But the deal breaker for me is quality. I was looking at a pioneer nex 8000 before stumbling upon those android units. I like the fact that you can pretty much do anything on these headunits and having torque app on all the time would be amazing. I've seen some people use a nexus 7 tablet to make a headunit but it requires a single din headunit and some say it's a hassle running both at the same time.

Oh and volume knobs... I don't know who came around and said "volume knobs are bad, remove them and turn them into crappy buttons"

I think the first step would be to agree on a company to approach for a group buy (Dasaita, Joying, Hizpo, Xtrons, etc) and also on the shape of the head unit...

For example, I know that I am leaning more towards the 200mmx100mm (Toyota-fit) HU but others , may prefer the universal 178mmx100mm units. Also support is important both from the seller and for the environment/chipset. From what I have seen, Joying provides the best customer support but not as open as the PX5 chipset.

Oh and I guess the operating system. 5.1 is what most of them have. This hizpo one has 7.1 nougat. (Again; I'm an iOS guy, this stuff is new for me )
Yes, the Hizpo uses the RK3188 (Rockchips Cortex A9).

When it comes to these head units the android version is not as important as it would be on a phone or tablet, IMO. Where you might use your phone for a dozen different things daily, a head unit will probably be doing the same two or three things all of the time. The newest 7.1 units will still be running the same versions of Torque, maps, Spotify, whatever as a 4.4.4 unit.

The versions of android these ship with are torn apart and hacked back together to be able to communicate with the MCU, only use certain dongles (sometimes), etc. It's not real pretty in most cases but is functional, or can be made functional.

You could buy two or three and set them up on a bench to play with...if purchased through somewhere like Amazon returning them shouldn't really be an issue.

Regarding bluetooth OBDII adapters; for a few more bucks you can get a USB model like the OBDLink SX...no pairing problems and it reads PIDs faster.

Well, none of these are what you'd call quality. It's a real trade off. For me the ability to run full-blown android in the dash outweighs the ins and outs of the software and cheap build.

I agree. I find using a touchscreen and capacitive buttons in the car to be a huge f*cking pain in the ass. The more knobs and real buttons the better.

Your reply is amazing, thank you! Obdlink SX is the USB one right? Don't you need a device that accepts the SX? Like would hizpo accept it? Or joying? Etc. I've been looking at those and I'm pretty close to buying the lx bluetooth model ( even though I own an iPhone with dashcommand and elm327 wifi) but if the SX works with a joying headunit, or hizpo. I'm buying this now lol!

Yep, I'm using one on my old MTCB Joying. It uses standard FTDI/USB OTG so it should work with most things.

The only thing that can be annoying at times is that due to the way android handles USB devices, Torque (or whatever app you specified) runs at every boot if its plugged in. Not an issue if you run it all of the time, but I don't so I was thinking of getting one of these and tucking it up under the dash to turn it on and off without unplugging it:

Wow that's exactly what I'm looking for. Fast read outs with constant connection. Does it turn off when the car is off though? The lx version does that. I'd have to find a hu with 2 USB inputs. 1 for my phone and 1 for the adapter.

Yes, it powers off/on with accessory power. AFAIK most units have two standard USB ports in the back and many have a mini plug in the front. You can also retain the OEM USB plug behind the gearshift with something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/SCOSCHE-Adapt...actory+usb+brz

People have also connected USB hubs to one of the rear ports and crammed it in behind the HU or in the glovebox.
