Wow. Down here you rarely see roadkill because a redneck will scoop it up for dinner in a heartbeat!

I never saw an armadillo in Illinois until I saw one as roadkill on I-70 about 40 miles east of St Louis this April. Once I got home Saturday, I checked, and the furthest north verified armadillo in Illinois turns out to be in Will County (county seat is Joliet, IL), less than 50 miles from Chicago. Hard to imagine.

I initially figured this was something I might take care of myself, but I'll be getting an estimate for a comprehensive insurance claim later this afternoon. I'll let you know what they say.

At this point, I reckon I'm going to let insurance take it, since I think it's going to cost more than I'd like to (armadillo) shell out.
Damnit that is only like 3 hours south of me (or 1 hour south of my one plant). First it was the bloody possums coming up and now it is the armadillos. Can't you southerners keep your gall dang varmints down there?

And insurance can pay for this one.

The estimate includes replacing (and painting) the bumper cover and the left bumper cover bracket, replacing the fender liner, aligning the fender, and doing a suspension alignment.

At each step, they anticipate the possibility of finding more damage as parts are removed.

Total cost of this deal, $1220.29

Dang. Makes me wonder how much it would cost me to repair my bumper that got deformed by someone backing into it and taking off. The thing has already taken a beating from running over retread bits too.
At least the poor armadillo has an excuse, people who take off because they know they wont get caught don't.

For anyone who cares how this turned out, the total cost of my repair came to $2723.49, of which I paid the deductible and the (subsidized) cost of a rental.

The increase in cost was ascribed to the front fender being creased, which when fixed had to be painted, and the paint was blended into the driver's door. Everything looks new again.

Wow - they usually find "more to fix" after the original estimate - this was a good bit. Glad it was covered.
