FS or trade: 981 Cayman S
Hello ft86club, it's been awhile. I had a 2013 BRZ (silver, premium, 6-sp) and would like to get back into one as I am faced with selling my Porsche 981 Cayman S. Hoping to find a BRZ enthusiast who has done proper maintenance and added some suspension mods, header, tune, etc. and is looking to get into a Cayman. I would like to gain a nice BRZ + cash. Asking $57,000 outright.
2014 Porsche Cayman S - 981CS. CPO until 4/29/2019. Approx. 10,220 miles. White exterior, black interior. Following optional equipment: sport chrono pkg, sport design steering wheel, sport seats plus (2-way), 20" Carrera S wheels with painted Porsche center caps, wheels painted platinum satin, guards red seat belts. Additional original and aftermarket equipment: GT3 front lower control arms with solid caster puck, 991 GT3 front sway bar (3 position adjustable), Tarett Engineering 5-position adj. rear sway bar, Tarett adjustable droplinks front and rear, Bilstein PSS10 coilovers, motorsport front brake caliper stud conversion, Porsche 991/981 clear LED corner markers, 7mm wheel spacers all 4 corners with longer lug bolts, Weathertech floor liners (black). Setup: weight with 180 lb driver and 3/4 tank - 3,231, corner balanced within 1 lb. Alignment -2.5 camber front, -2.0 camber rear, 0 toe front, 1mm toe in rear each side. All original suspension components will go with the car, as well as the original amber corner markers. The carpet floor mats still have the plastic covering and also go with the car. I gotta ask... why? To a lot of people, including myself, see this car as the next 'step up' from the 86 sports car platform. Why the urge or desire to go back? If it's a finacial decision I could see, I just want to know what you missed?

I will be sorely missing this Cayman. It is purely a financial decision. I also had fond memories of my old BRZ and find it will still feed the driver enthusiast in me, absent the Cayman.

Its strange, but once you can afford to move up in cars, sometimes you miss the simplicity of the less expensive ones. OP - GLWS - The good thing is both cars are fun. If I was in the neighborhood for another P-car, I would work something out with you. But, we are waiting about 5 years before dumping the BRZ and moving back to a Cayman or other model.

Brzaapi hit on many valid points between the FT86 and pcar 98x platforms. They both are so capable in daily driving AND track duty with just a few simple mods. You can take them to more extremes, albeit the FT86 is more mod-friendly power wise. I personally would never boost an otherwise stock Porsche 9A1 flat six.
Running costs are higher for the 981. Mainly, tires and brakes. Engine cooling is ready to go from the factory in the 981. I haven't driven a FT86 with a good coilovers setup, so can't compare to how the 981 handles. My '13 BRZ had the RCE yellow springs with Koni yellows and camber bolts and spc rear arms to dial in the camber settings. It was a ton of fun at that level of modification. The responses of both cars is incredible, just that the speeds are higher for the 981. Last event I couldn't 'quite' keep pace with a 500awhp evo that was running a sq 275 rcomp setup, caged, lightened, etc. I did get the point by from a welldriven LS swap RX7 who had some aero in the form of a large rear wing. Point being, without serious power mods, a BRZ would be very hard pressed to run with those cars, but driving the 981 well can get you there. Lastly, I started out learning with a '93 Sentra SER, just barely touch the brakes and keep the throttle pinnned...great times in that car. Moved to b5 A4 (APR st3, coilovers, stoptechs), then 951 (maintenance pig), BRZ, then 981. Except for the maintenance hassles of the 951, all have been terrific. Finallly, never owned a S2000, and have a ton of respect for those and would want to check one of those out too. Last edited by KRC 9; 06-25-2017 at 11:58 AM. |

A new 718 Cayman with same optional equipment (20" wheels, sport seats plus, sport chrono) has a total retail price of $62,030 and a much lower actual price. Performance wise is also very similar to your car and has much better consumption and CO2 results. The price of your offer seems quite high and cannot be justified by the aftermarket parts. I am afraid that your car was seriously devaluated by the much better offering of the newer model.

Reliability with the dual uses remains to be seen with the 718. Drive ability is already proven to be different between the two and both have a market.
