I have a low opinion of that vague unnamed dev shipping JavaScript based on how many times I have to sit and wait for execution, but never apply that to an individual even if they earn it. At most it makes me sad, and leaves me wondering where I could have done better helping them learn and improve. The chances for me to be the one learning are further between, sadly - I don't consider myself particularly good... Not bad, and certainly have a record of working magic, but nothing special. The reality is that corporate pressure and piecemeal additive "one more feature" without attention to the whole is more to blame for the sad state of client-side code these days than the older "ceo'son whipped this up, anyone can JavaScript" attitude... Though it's still hurting the industry through the low opinion of the language it fostered.

I had to wait three seconds between typing characters on my own employers site the other day. I've helped try to diagnose, but it's in the Someone Else's Problem circuit now. I can't fix everything for everyone... I've also been told my 19mo old phone is too old and slow and isn't the target (different product, same mentality... It's the user device, not the code or architecture)

I must be harboring some gripe that's coloring my comments because I've been getting lots of "be nice" feedback online. Time for a LOA maybe.

Cheers
My apologies, I misunderstood.

I agree with you. I too have observed how the general bloating of software has infected websites to the point where no one knows what software they are pushing, or why. And they don't care, as long as it looks "good enough".

What bugs me the most at the moment is set top boxes, TV's and other electronics with GUI's. They are all clearly designer driven. The pride of the programmer is nowhere to be seen anymore.
One example: Most of the basic functions of a file system are missing from the administration interface for recordings on all PVRs I've had or tried. And I know from experience that this is because the designer didn't draw the buttons needed, and if the programmer tries to add them anyway they get shot down because of "cluttering". I've heard designers claim that "we need to make 80% of what the typical user wants to do as easy as possible, and ditch the rest".
Most such devices are also riddles with bugs and memory leaks. And when I complain about it they say "try to restart it". Software that can't run indefinitely is seriously flawed in my book, but no one cares about that anymore.

After I quit drinking ...... and was trapped at the giant family functions, I would look for opportunities to "run down to the store" to get whatever they were getting low on ..... usually beer. That was good for about an hour.

Another strategy was to act like I was entertaining the small children ...... at least their "conversation" made more since.

Also, I found that if you keep moving around, everyone will think you are somewhere else, and you won't be missed ...... as you find a place to hide .....

Oh, no ...... they never ran out of alcohol.

About 20 years ago, after trying to drink up all the whisky in North America and Europe ...... the time came for me to quit drinking any alcoholic beverages at all.

(yep, 20 some years clean and sober - so, now I have no excuse for being a jerk .... )

I'd had already quit the hard drugs back in the 60s.

No, but it reminds me of where we did get our milk straight from the cows. Came out of a big refrigerated stainless steel tank. Had to run the stirring paddles for a few seconds to mix the cream.

Not too long, though. Don't wanna make butter.

Yep, I remember, as a toddler, sitting on the kitchen floor, of our farmhouse, cranking on one of these things for hours (well, it seemed like hours) asking my mother "when will it be done?" Her reply was "when it gets too hard for you to turn".

You're doing fine. You have a nice flaky crust.

Thanks.

I briefly considered googling images for "asshole flaky crust", but decided against.
