I'm so confused by people lately! This week I've seen the 86/BRZ mentioned as being super slow even for freeway driving multiple times. It's kind of ridiculous. Unless there's an idiot sitting at forty on the on-ramp in front of me I can get up to speed super quickly. Revving in the 3500-5000 rpm range and then up shifting is generally quite enough and then it's easy to even get up to 80mph without even trying (really!!).

The only time I've really experienced slowness it's because I accidentally shifted up too early or had to slow down for an idiot driver merging right in front of me and then forgot to downshift right away from sixth to fifth. But usually all it takes is downshifting one or two gears and then bringing the rpms up.

I'm still new to stick and I mostly don't have issues with the supposed slowness of the car.

Just kind of ridiculous to hear people say it's slow and can't do anything lol

If I could survive a 60 mile round trip commute in my automatic 2000 Corolla on Arizona highways in high school just fine, then anyone should be able to drive an FR-S/BRZ/86 on the highway without issue.

Drove one of the below (highly modified but still the same engine) for two years. People think they can't be seen in a Twin? Think that the 55HP wasn't enough to drive with? It was if you DROVE the damn thing and just didn't point and push.

No kidding...
It's like how Harley guys justify their shitty sounding ridiculous exhaust.
No, more sound isn't going to stop a van from running into you.
No, more power isn't going to magically make you safer on the highway.

I can attest to the Harley comment haha, having straight pipes did not stop any soccer moms from cutting me off.

Do people not know how to down shift twice to get passing power? lol every poor old miata must be crashing left and right from not having enough torque.

In any case, I guess now I can get factory suspension bits, and hopefully not void warranty etc. Guessing that it lowers the car alittle bit, guessing there's no difference in the Ts brembos. Besides that Glad I didn't get any body bits yet I want to see those new under body spoilers.

The underbody spoilers is the STi lip kit already available for the 17. They just term them as "underbody spoilers".

What do you mean by down shifting twice? If I'm in 6th and I want to accelerate quickly and I know downshifting to 5th won't be enough should I go down from 6th to 4th and give it the necessary throttle or should I go to 5th first and then downshift again to 4th?

Not trying to argue, genuinely curious. It's my third week with the car and my first manual so I'm still learning. I feel very comfortable downshifting and rev-matching at this point but I haven't skipped gears on the way down for accelerating purposes, only when coming to a stop or slowing down by a lot.

I agree that this car does not feel slow at all for city and highway driving, I don't have any problems passing others or zipping through traffic when needed.

If the wheels are still 18x7.5, then the a 215 tire width is a bit better than the 225. A bit more streched and a bit stiffer side-walls. I am doing the same in my car where I have 16x7 and still use a 205 tire width.

Hey there,

Speaking from my knowledge... which is only about 12 years of Manual driving, I'm sure they are other that have driven longer and more that can jump in.

First and foremost, don't skip gears, look for videos or someone near you to teach you to downshift correctly if you already know how then good! and then do it twice 6-5-4. things you don't do is 3-2-1 never go to 1 unless you need to or you've come to a stop or you're under 10 mph and really need the power, you'll kill the transmission that way.

Now, the other way around I'm not sure if this is the case with our cars the 86/BRZ but on the new ND Miata, you can skip gears going Up this is because the transmission is brand new and made to save MPG. So the car will actually tell you to go from 2-4 and 4-6. In that, it's ok to skip shifts. ONLY going up.

There is an argument however In some newer cars you can also skip gears going down, but I wouldn't recommend it. this is because the 86 transmission is based off a proven old design. ND miata transmission are new and have been known to blow up, so stick with traditional driving for longevity.
and great that you've gotten into manual, I think alot of people make argument for more power because they've driven faster cars that might have the same amount of enjoyable value. This is great for diversity of thought, recently I drove the Alfa Giulia QF and now everything feels slow lol. Still love my BRZ tho. It's all I can really afford at this time really, different priorities. I think this car is good enough for everyday for sure.

anyways I'm sure others will jump in and tell you not to skip either. Hope it helps.
