Catted Headers

Hey Guys!

I am planning to buy a header, but I want to keepy car street legal. Cali is crazy about emissions laws, so I gotta make sure I don't get in trouble.

Ft86speedfactory offers an UEL Catted Header. If the header has a cat, will it be considered as carb legal? I also want to pass smog, so I gotta make sure. It'll be soon when I get smog check.

Thanks!

If I recall correctly, there is no aftermarket header that is smog legal for our cars, even with the cat. It would probably pass the pipe sniffer, but if they do a visual check I can't imagine it would pass.

^Yep, what funwheeldrive said, there no such thing. Even if you get a catted header, it is technically not "street legal" for CA standard. The only thing that would be is the OEM header. Most folks just get the header they want and keep it until the car needs to be smogged.

If you want to do much of anything performance-wise here you kind of need to resign yourself to the fact you're going to have to hold on to all of the OEM parts and swap them in and out every couple of years.

Good info! I'm getting to the point of putting headers on, and I'd been wondering about this. Now that I know I'd have to keep the stock headers anyway, I'll just save some money and get the catless.

Thanks for the heads up.

I thought it was more the improved intake manifold? I would guess you would also need some kind of tuning to get the benefits.

I was thinking it'd still be carb legal. Time to do catless and save the stock header then! Gonna smell the sweet scent of HP boost!

The reason why catted headers aren't CARB legal is nobody wants to pay the extortion fee to get their shit to come with a sticker.

CARB is a fckin joke. I hate dealing with them. Try doing a engine swap in Cali and abiding by their guidelines. Your opinion of them will change. All ill say on the forum ha.

For a 2017 MT, is it still worth it to change to a catless header?
