Roast me if you want but I'm on a long car ride and I was thinking. What if I remove the chip from the key and tape that bad boy somewhere under my steering wheel? And then I just make a copy and any key will work. Hmmm

Yes. No idea on price, I've been meaning to stop and ask.

Hmmm Interesting. If not too much money it will be the answer to many an issue here.

There are people that have done this with other cars and it works.
Out of curiosity, I just tried starting my car with what I thought was the 3rd unchipped key I got with the car and it started. Does that 3rd key without unlock buttons also have a chip inside it?

Yes. It will not open the trunk though.

Do valet keys generally set off car alarms?

Most cars with keyless entry that I've encountered will have the car alarm go off if you use the keyhole to unlock the door, as it hasn't disengaged the alarm system. Since valet keys don't have a fob/keyless buttons I wonder if the same also happens with those.

Maybe he didn't get it at a dealer? Car lot or owner directly? My bought my first BRZ at a car lot and I only got one key. They usually sell as is and don't give two 💩💩 but then again I had crappy credit so beggars can't be choosers 🤣🤣

That is sort of what I meant. The fact he bought it with one key isn't the dealer's fault. Just saying "Oh you can just get one cut since there is no chip" is.

If you're going to get a key, DONT get a cheap eBay/amazon key. The majority of those don't program! You'll still get charged the programing fee but for nothing. Always best to do it right!
