I don't understand why everyone is getting upset about people wanting 250-300 hp versions. They showed the FT86 G Sports concept which was fitted with a turbo so I don't see why it's unreasonable for people to ask/hope for a higher powered turbo option. If you want your base model for $20k good, but I think Toyota would be making a mistake to not offer a higher hp OPTIONAL version for around $30k or so.
This way they could satisfy those who want the 200hp (or whatever it ends up being) n/a version and those who want more power with a turbo. I personally will have to seriously consider purchasing this if the price isn't low 20s and only has 200hp. This is just my opinion on the matter, but I know i'm not the only one who thinks that way. The majority of the members here are not of this mind, but if they want to try and appeal to a larger demographic it would be a good idea to offer these different options. Edit: And to those who will say then go after-market, some people prefer to have factory warranty and reliability with their vehicles. |

Im with justanother on this, I personally love the 86g concept. The only way I see myself buying one is if it is badged as a toyota and there is a gsports package or equivalent. Some of us want turbochargers or spoilers etc. I'm not saying everyone wants them but for us that do its a major selling point. If they take a page out of subaru's book they should do well. (impreza, wrx, sti) trim levels...

people aren't getting upset about those who want 250-300 hp versions. people are getting upset because some people say any sports car under 25k that doesn't have similar straight line performance to the v6 mustang will not sell.

A lot of people here want the FT-86 to be a BUDGET light sports car, which was the initial concept... fair enough.
But you have to FACTOR IN, that Toyota is in dire need of "image" builder.... LFA, ISF are Lexus badged cars... Supra replaces is all smoke screen, MR2 replacement are just hopes and dreams ATM. Toyota using Subaru motor, to me... its perfect opportunity to easily implement the current WRX turbo... very easily... so easily that no R&D on engine/turbo is needed.... all development resources are SHARED by Subaru and Toyota, panels will be Toyota supplied as they have more experience with production tooling... chassis is straight off the current Subaru Impreza/WRX... so the cost of development IS not too high, in comparable to 370Z and other vehicles concepted from scratch. I'm hopeful it sells for 50K AUD... which translate approximately as the current WRX price... so what ever the Subaru WRX price is selling in US... take away approx 2-3K from that or add around the same.. should be price indication... AGAIN this IS calculated SPECULATION... |

^^^
But the thing is.... WRX interior is crap.... I hope they make it so much better... I dont mind the extra 2-3K added price if the interior is NICE.... even upto 10K I'll pay if the interior comes with all soft touch resin, leather seats... as long as it doesnt add too much weight... |

When it comes to the power output... if Toyota can reach same as WRX power which is 195kW... 250-255HP.... then why not????
Its ALWAYS better to have factory turbo installed than AFTER.... because that way you know the power output and turbo induction is ENGINEERED and TESTED over a year period.... after market Turbos and by TRD (which is an OUT-SOURCED development of turbo and super chargers post engine production) are a lot more riskier.. look at the Toyota Aurion TRD.... here in Oz... the STOCK engine off factory was 200kW which is 265-270hp... then TRD Australia outsourced the supercharger development to another engineering firm and it added an extra 41kW.... so power is 241kW... which is 310-315hp... but they had problems with engine over heating... and eventually costumer feedback went so bad that TRD Australia only lasted 6 months.. before Toyota Japan got rid of them.... moral is..... ALWAYS have as much POWER off the factory..... |

i don't WANT forced induction. it's just a personal preference. on top of that, it adds loads to the price and maintenance. news and updates keep saying that they are running over budget and they keep having to raise the price target, so i kinda doubt they could offer a wrx engine for the same price. the development plus the amount of aluminum probably going into this thing will make it cost more than the wrx. if they could have an OPTIONAL turbo motor that is maybe 1-2k more than the wrx and the standard n/a model is LESS than the wrx then i'd be happy.

I am a little disappointed that the article says the Subaru version will look a lot like the Toyota version. I was really hoping for some differentiation and not a repeat of the Mitsu Eclipse and Eagle Talon. I am glad to find more people in this thread with similar hopes for the car as myself. Feeling like a troll over in the other threads where people keep insisting that it will be ok for the car to be under powered and have an interior that resembles the last gen celica. |

do you know why you feel like a troll? it's because when the ft-86 was introduced toyota announced it had a very specific concept and engineering target for this car. people who that concept appealed to created this forum. then you and others came to this forum and said that that concept is gonna be a complete failure and it will never sell. back when the gtr was a concept only, if they created a forum for the new gtr, how do you think the members would like it if i got on the forum and said the gtr needs to be rwd only and under 30k for it to ever be a sales success? even though big turbo power and awd has always been part of the gtr? even though it'd be impossible to add big turbo power to the gtr for under 30k? i think gtr fans would have been rather pissed off and i would've felt like a troll too.

There were just as many excited people when Mazda was going to re-invent the sports car and revive the market with the RX-8 and it's obvious that didn't happen. All I'm saying is that it can't hurt to be a little objective when it comes to what it takes to make a successful car in today's market. I'm clearly not the only person here that wants this car to have a good/upscale interior and competitive straight line performance in addition to great looks and fantastic handling. |
