The stability programming for one is totally different from the standard model.

Other stuff arguably could be purchased and imported but then the end result will never be the same as something built straight from the factory. Like $1000 bucks for just the STI airbag cover?

It would be real funny if this Type-RA and BRZ STI whatever are just show and tell cars for their outdoor event like in previous years and not meant for mass production.

I can see the carbon roof with the PP and that ugly rear wing making it into some special STi PP RA TSi SVX or something! All of the weight saving of installing a carbon roof will be negated by the super long badge on the rump!

Well Subaru should now have the sufficient technical knowhow to properly bring back the Alcyone / SVX. But then the probably couldn't replicate the thin pillars.

I am wondering how much of all this enthusiasm about a turbo TRD or STI model will really turn into a purchase. I kind of doubt whether a $35-40K twin will really sell in quantities that mean something to the bottom line of Toyota or Subaru. There is WRX-STI at this price point and performance but it can also be used as a family car without sacrificing functionality and space. IMHO, many people who are shopping in this price range cannot justify paying $40K for a two-seater but they can justify buying the WRX-STI for the same price since it combines the functionality of a larger car with sporty performance.

If they make a $60-70K Lexus, that is a different story. People who can afford that price range usually can afford the second car. They will probably want to buy the Lexus sports car (or Cayman, etc.) over BRZ-STI.

The whole point of an 86 or BRZ is making a "real" sports car available at a price point below $30K which is a unique market position. This is what is really interesting about our cars.

Plus our cars are designed in such a way that they can easily be upgraded to ~50% more power easily and reliably. I have just installed JRSC; the space in the engine bay is so shockingly comfortable. Engine and car perform admirably even after 50% increased power. Even if I am wrong and there will be an STI eventually, I won't be holding my breath because I have one. It is even better since I built it! Go get your TRD/STI; there are so many options. Just control your greed, stay in reasonable limits, you will be so satisfied.

I love carbon fiber roofs, I wish Subaru spiced up the "STi" or tS or whatever it is with one.

Carbon roofs are certainly cool, but I'm not a big fan of adding cost without any benefit to performance or reliability. I suppose they're probably more hail damage-resistant, but that's a risk I'm willing to take with aluminum if the other horizontal panels are also aluminum. In the end, if I'm spending my own money, I'll pass on the carbon roof. It would likely weigh about the same as aluminum.

So this is what I was getting at. If and when they discontinue the BRZ, the high end Subaru sports car flagship to take its place would have to be the return of the Alcyone, complete with AWD and Boxer-6 (maybe even a Turbo). Fits right in with their intention to upscale the brand.

Everybody says 22B, but imo this is the Subaru collectible.

Some questionable web sites claimed they were told that there would be a second gen. Neither Subaru nor Toyota have ever officially said any such thing. As we all know they are not very forthcoming with such info.

If Subaru is going up scale, I highly doubt we'll see a two door sports car.

Maybe a luxury coupe like Infiniti or Lexus .
