Yup, even my 73 911 had a shifter like moving a mixing stick in a can of paint. Still loved the car though, people complain too much these days. Oh my shifter is terrible. Oh I removed my cat and my car smells horrible. lol

I always feel like I'm the only person who loves the smell of a catless car. The best is when you switch back and forth between 93oct and e85 so you get to enjoy both gasoline and ethanol smells

Driving for many years as cats slowly became more common I do not miss that smell at all. Being stuck in traffic with a few hundred cars, none (or very few) with cats, while driving an open top Karmaan Ghia was a level of hell that even Dante didn't want to discuss.

I could see that being horrible. I'm sure it would be overwhelming with the majority of traffic being catless.

When Detroit does the dream cruise every year I hear a lot of complaints about eyes burning from all the fumes and while mine have teared up on occasion I still love it. Normally I make it a point to be there the whole weekend even if it is getting increasingly worse over the years I've been going.

I get tears every time I have to drive through Detroit as well!
I can see it right now (well the skyline) just by looking out my office window. I am waving to you from across the river.

Cats have saved the world. Literally the best thing to come along since internal combustion caught on. The problem is that they have been in use long enough that younger people don't remember a time without them. Every time I go driving with my catless "wub wub" friends I'm like...

I do admit that I am too young to remember a time before cats were wide spread. Maybe that attributes to why I like the smell so much as It's a rarity now. It reminds me of back when I was younger riding 2 stroke dirt bikes as well so I have nothing but good memories associated with the smell.

Yep. The youngun's that never lived through it really have no idea just how bad it was. When you consider that there are 40% more cars on the road now then there was in 75 when they became law then how bad it would be without them is almost beyond comprehension. I never drove in places like LA where it was truly horrible but even Toronto was suffocating and it had a nice open lake beside it not sitting down in a valley.

I know I will get flamed with "oh it is government bullshit", "it wasn't real" and " fake pictures are fake" but some of us lived through the shit and know differently.

I get that. I used to race 2-stroke open class. Memories are much better when I wasn't trapped in it.

It's easy to forget that Subaru is a tiny tiny vehicle manufacturer in the grand scheme of things when you live in one of the 4 places where they are most popular (NE, NW, CO, CA, Florida might make the list as well).

Seriously, they don't even rank in the top 20 (I don't think I could name 20 auto manufacturers off the top of my head), they make less than 1 million cars per year, there are literally 2x as many BMW's or Mercedes being made than Subaru's right now. 3x as many Peugot's, Renault's, or Suzuki's, when's the last time you saw one of those???

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...cle_production

Edit: I guess that makes my Impreza coupe more rare than the 3 series that cost 50% more sitting next to me in traffic, so I've got that going for me...

Shit, like you said, they're all up here. Friggin' Subieland. I had no idea it was such an anomaly.

Cats. I see what you did there...

OP's question was answered long ago. We are well into supplemental material for the interested student.

I have the same perception up here in this neck of the woods. The Subaru (especially the forester type) is quite popular ......
