the whole "young guy in sports car" thing totally pushes the hater button for some people
I experienced this constantly when I had an RX-7 and a Neon. You can violate just about any traffic law in a boring DD and nobody bats an eye. But drive like a granny in a fast-looking car and suddenly people lose their shit |

The OP is right. In this car (it was the same in my Gencoupe) people drive differently around you. I drive for a living and in my big ole work 2500HD people don't do the same stupid shit that they do when I'm in my own FRS- but I'm the same guy driving. I don't know why.

So does the "old guy in sports car" thing. If it's an older guy who can finally afford to get a car he likes, it's a 'mid life crisis'.

Oh god I hate that. People that have known me all my life and know the cars I have owned took one look at it and said "Midlife crisis eh?". Well apparently I have been in a midlife crisis since the age of 14 then.

This. If people say that to me I say "No, my mid-life crisis was the years I spent daily driving a Chevy Astro because it fit my family. Mid-life crisis ended when I bought this car instead".

If I go to pass someone (on a two land road where I have to use the oncoming traffic lane) I fully commit and do it as quickly as possible from the start. Signal on, downshift two gears, floor it and shoot around, alternate signal on, back in lane. Some people may consider I'm being a tool, but really I just don't want to end up in a drag race or in a ditch.

Passing on a 2-laner is a multi-step strategy. Also to the younger drivers, practice backing down and pulling in to your original spot. I witnessed violent death for the first time as a child. It was a head-on collision between a bike and oncoming car. My dad anticipated it as soon as he saw an oncoming driver peek out from behind a semi. Mid pass the driver changed her mind. Instead of backing down, she veered over towards our shoulder. So did the biker. Learn to back down safely.

So many of these ****s on the road. One nice thing is the throttle response on this car is so quick and the light weight mean you can overtake most people in most situations. I regularly pass all sorts of cars even ones that are much faster than the FRS.
When I got my car back in '13 I noticed I started getting attention from others in sporty cars. They will rev up their engine if they see me, or go a little faster or take a corner faster than they would otherwise. At first I didn't get what was going on, now I understand it is a tip of the hat to another cool sports car. Also its so satisfying to beat big muscle cars off the line of a red light because they don't want to rev up those big engines and they are so heavy, in normal traffic the 86 is a quick car. |

Definitely have to commit and forcefully pass or avoid others as they will take any move as antagonism or challenge. Best to just avoid anything remotely resembling a challenge and have fun by yourself when you can. It's also fun to occasionally slip by 'em without their knowing although that can sometimes be dangerous too.
As for people driving in the middle of the road, that's just lack of consideration for the rest of the world. I live in a very old neighborhood with narrow streets and I'm very good at weaving in and out around parked cars and pulling over at stop signs so others will have room. My biggest problem is folks coming from the opposite direction stopping unnecessarily when they could easily go around a parked car before we meet. A quick move is usually better than no move at all. |
