Call AAA. They are a non-profit insurer so they'll give you pretty much the going rate. Also Costco sometimes has member deals.

If you're with Geico, you could get 10% discount by taking this online drivers course:
http://geico.amersc.com/

I haven't tried it myself, but might be worth looking into.
You might not be in position to do this, but another trick I've used with Geico is: If you currently only have ONE car on your insurance policy, find the OLDEST, CHEAPEST car to add to your policy!

It doesn't even have to be drivable (mine's wasn't). And just buy the MINIMUM liability coverage for it. You could potentially save HUNDREDS from their multi-car discount. I added an old '77 Toyota to my policy (which cost ~$90 per 6 months) and saved over $200 on my 6-month premium because of the multi-car discount!

Sorry, I'll clarify:

Originally with Geico 6 months. Then for my renewal they increased my premium by ~70% ($450/6mo).

After finding this out, I shopped around and Progressive gave me a very competitive quote. A couple of weeks later when I went to purchase, they re-quoted me at double the original quote. This brought the quote very close to what Geico increased premium to for my upcoming renewal.

My credit jumped up recently and my insurance dropped so low I feel like I am the one taking advantage of them since usually the
insurance company mostly does the butthole penetrating to us. I also echo the shop around advice.
My credit rating has been steadily increasing, and in the high 700s. Every other company wants an extra $50/mo compared to Geico & Progressive, which are now asking for essentially the same amount.

I've gotten a quote from AAA and it was also significantly more than my current premium. I'll give it another shot though, maybe things have changed.

It sounds like everything is in order and you have shopped already. I can tell you that I just renewed a week ago and mine didn't go up. In fact I believe it even went down a few dollars.
No tickets, no accidents/claims, good credit, no adding teen drivers, no change of address/zip code. Something is not right. I also have Progressive.

I'm thinking my age is the most significant factor... and maybe mileage? I'm 22, est 15,000/yr.

I'm currently with Geico in CA as well. I know I'm paying more due to my age and vehicle, but this increase caught me really off guard considering I have a clean driving record that hasn't changed in the last 6 months.
Over the last two years Geico has done this to many people. Do a quick Google search and you will see you are not alone.
Yes, the car can increase if there are many incidents on file but not by 70%. Every other one of them would have to be totaled to impact the individual model that much. It is usually the go to response from insurance agents though. The odds are they did exactly what you said and enticed you in with a lower rate and then bumped it when they could.

Mine (in Canada mind you) just dropped $50 to a whole $870 a year (full coverage with extra replacement value).

My insurance didn't drop significantly until somewhere around 37 or 38 so that may be part of it. If you had lower insurance the prior term with the
same company though then age shouldn't be a factor in your case and they can't use your age against you.
If anything you are older by 6 months now so it should have slightly gone down. When they ask me what I drive each year I always say real low
which as it turns out is only 4k miles a year (at least in the FRS) but I also drive the work van 10-15k also and have another car too for my son.
I don't think mileage would have done that much for an increase especially since 15k is about average anyway.

Other factors are age, zip code, distance to work and if you park it in a garage as opposed to a street. I had a friend who worked at Farmers who said there's a whole bunch of boxes they can tick to get the price down.

Getting on a family plan (multiple drivers) helps, too. They used to give discounts for LoJack but not anymore.

Good luck!

Well, they got me. At least they're still offering better rates than more traditional insurance companies... though the gap is quickly closing.

I guess I'm just new to the market and they're charging me as much as they think i can afford!

How much mileage would you have to under estimate in order for the insurance company to start denying your claims? I reported that I was driving more than I originally stated (12,000 -> 15,000) and they increased my rates by a little, but I'm curious as to how accurate you really have to be.

http://www.actuaries.org/ASTIN/Collo...rs/Lemaire.pdf

A bit of a read but the pertent pint is this:
"Practical and legal issues are bound to occur. Exact mileage to be driven is uncertain at the beginning of the year. As insurance premiums are always paid anticipatively, customers in practice would have to pre-pay for the miles they expect to drive. A premium adjustment would then take place during, or at the end of the policy-year, in the form of a refund, a carry-over to next policy year, or an additional payment. Policyholders cannot be expected to voluntarily self-report excess mileage; regulators will require the insurer to notice the excess and bill the policyholder accordingly, resulting in additional costs. What if a claim occurs after the pre-paid number of miles has been exceeded? Any position taken by the insurance industry than the claim is not covered, or that the company has the right to recover the cost from the policyholder, is certainly going to be challenged in court, with the insurer most likely to lose the case."

There seems to be no set standard tough so I wouldn't sweat it.

I drove 20K miles the first year with my BRZ (long daily drives to work + alot of interstate trips), and I estimated only 5K miles on my policy lol.

I had to make a claim twice to get my car repaired (windshield crack, and headlight/front bumper damage). They have yet to check/ask about the accuracy of the annual miles I reported.. and I've been with Geico for several years now.

Well, to be fair, I honestly thought I would only drive my BRZ 5K miles my first year since I have a 2nd car as well. But the BRZ ended up being so fun and usable (trunk-wise), I never needed or wanted to drive any other car. Didn't want to rent a car for out of state trips either (including several 10+ hr trips).

I still have my BRZ and my 2nd car both listed at 5K miles per year.

Understandable. I cant seem to get enough seat time. Almost wished my commute to work was more than 4 miles haha
