Really looking for a pre-amp processor: something along the lines of the new Anthem AVM 60 or NAD T187 for $3k. Would love a NAD M17, but that's almost double...

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but there's an audio forum called audiokarma dot Org out there you guys might find interesting.

My stereo set up is a pair of Yamaha 690's, and an Accuphase stack. T-100, C-200, and a P-300. I have a small collection of speakers from the past, Golden Age of stereo.

I've got a question for you gurus...

I'm looking into projectors for a future home theater. I'm thinking the Epson 5040UB. My question is, what size should the screen be in order for the picture to be the best? I'm not talking about the viewing distance but rather the projections size of the picture.

Another way to put it is, at what screen size does a particular projector stop projecting the most accurate/crisp picture quality?

I'm debating between a 92" vs. >100" screens but wanted to know if there will be picture quality differences if i chose one over the other. Goal is to get the best picture quality.

Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

I have an Epson 8350 that I started off using with a 92" screen at a 16' throw. Decided to move up to the max size that would reasonably fit in the room (110") and reduced throw to 15'. Noticed a difference right off the bat - the image looked better on the 110" screen, mainly in contrast with bright images and dark images having more definition and detail shown. I use the low power cinema black mode, calibrated with a Blu-ray video/audio calibration disc. With a smaller screen the projector is putting a lot more light into a smaller area, so the image will be overblown in the highlights and have a lighter, greyer black level. Hard to go too big with a screen for a projector. Probably would be around 130" or larger where you start getting into image quality starting to suffer - 110" to 120" is pretty much the sweet spot in image size for Epson LCD projectors.

Also a 110" 16:9 ratio screen is perfect for viewing from ~9'... gets you nearly a theater sized viewing experience.

And not to mention there's nothing like gaming on a projector, especially if it has a great refresh rate like the 8350.

^^ Thanks - so it seems okay for me to upgrade to something like 110" screen. I'm getting a house built and asked them to put in the connections on the ceiling for HDMI and power hookups. I want to say they may have done 12' from the wall where the screen will be. Do projectors usually specify what the optimal screen size/distance from screen size is?

Screen size at throw range will be specified in manual. Double check the projector manual online to see what kind of screen sizes you get at various throw distances. Also, if you try to keep the lens aaround the midway zoom adjustment point (and centered both horizontally and vertically if at all possible) it will usually give the best sharpness and image quality. Figure out what screen size you want then look up the throw chart in the manual that will put that screen size right in the middle of the screen size range for a given throw distance. That should be the throw distance you go with for optimal performance.

Installed the Lawton Audio Tune-up Kit on my TH-X00 PH's and also experimented with some attenuator plates to put under the rear of the ear pads... why didn't I do this sooner! Clarity and detail much improved, and the bass...THE BASS....WOW! Absolutely in love with these phones unlike any others... although I did just get in the second revision Monolith M1060 yesterday to see what it offers.

Seems promising - bass has come around well in the past 20 hours I've been running them and the big planar drivers are very planary in sound... The headband though...not comfortable to me, puts a pressure point right on the top of the head. Will be modding them anyways, so headband issue will be taken care of in time. Have the recommended Audeze Microsuede earpads and will also do the paper towel mod to start off the modding with it...

The stock Monolith M1060...

And modded:

Loving these phones more and more...bass is nearly on par with the TH-X00 PH's and you have a nice detailed, smooth, and quick planar responsiveness...

I busted out a brand new stylus and I've been digitizing this release from vinyl to wav over the past few days: https://www.discogs.com/Beethoven-Ka...elease/3699703

Sounds great!

Curiosity got the best of me and I ordered an Audioquest Dragonfly Red. Been using the original 1.0 Dragonfly for the past several years. It'll be interesting to see if I notice a difference.

Will be interested in hearing your take on it. I only had the Red, and it is a pretty phenominal little DAC/amp to me.... compares very favorably to my desktop DAC/amp setup that runs 5 times the price. I can get basically a similar audio experience from my home system with the DFR plugged into my tablet at work. The DFR produces the clearist sound I have heard though and has a dead silent noise floor.

Plenty of power for most cans - here's a demo of my TH-X00 PH 's at half volume on my tablet...

And a great Youtube acoustic track you should use to test out the DFR vs 1.0:

And follow it up with this electronic track:

Thanks for the test songs! That'll be an interesting experience to compare them. I was also planning on trying this song since it has great bass:

I'm not sure I'm going to even try using it as an actual headphone amp since I have the Asgard 2. But, that's cool that it has that capability as well.

Primarily just going to be using it with my circa 1999 Klipsch Promedia computer speakers - the one with the dual subwoofer enclosure. It's still going strong after all these years! I did have to replace the speaker cables (went with Blue Jeans Cable) and also I replaced both subwoofers since the foam surrounds were dry rotted and it was actually cheaper to just replace the entire woofers.

Anyway, I was also thinking of ordering the Cambridge Audio Dacmagic 100 and giving that a try as well!
