If you want to beat him just buy a mustang then you can say it's faster in a straight line. You bought the wrong car for this discussion. It's also not your place to prove a magazine wrong. There are cheaper ways to resolve magazine editor grudges, like not buying the magazine.

991S owner here. LOVE that car. Wouldn't trade it for a BRZ in a million years but it took me a lot of hard work to get it it. Not everyone has the desire to do something that can have a new 911 as an option - There are some smokin deals out there for 20 to 30K older models though... and they are bullet proof sans a couple of well documented knits that should be checked. If you can afford a new BRZ then you can in fact afford a porsche. Hell a 944 is 10K for a very nice example.
With regards to the BRZ, it has one major thing that adds to the fun factor and many other parts of the recipe. The WEIGHT. No amount of power or chasis tuning can equal the fun factor of lightweight. Other things that make this car great are the primitive controls and lack of electronic doo dads. Lastly - some people just enjoy the tinkering and adding of aftermarket. Financially it makes ZERO sense so hopefully you have more in your investment accounts than in your toys... but it's fun. And there is no car including Porsche, that is this light and tunable. Is it the fastest? My 911S does 0-60 in a little over 3 seconds and 1/4 mile in ~11 sec mostly stock. I have a couple mods on it. You'd be nuts to attempt to build a BRZ that can do that reliably but its not the point of a BRZ. I have a Porsche and want a BRZ/86 Not to replace but for very different reasons. The Porsche never gets to stretch out and have fun around town running errands - its no different in fun factor than anything else on the road under 4K rpm. Above that and it's begging for a ticket and doubling most speed limits. Not as fun as wringing out the little 2.0 up to 45mph!

Quick times at autocrosses nowadays are set by GT3's not Miata's, the Boxster will beat the shit out of the 86 unless the owner is a shitty driver or it's on cheap all-seasons. |

I really need to give auto x a try. More road course track days than I can ever remember but I've never tried dodging the cones! I would assume that a mountain of mid range torque and some easy to heat rubber would be essential ??

Buy whatever car you actually like for what it is.
Buying/modifying a car to outrun another car will be an endless cycle. |

Good tires can be the difference between a top 20 time and back of the pack, but great driving can put a showroom stock Mini Cooper on run flats ahead of new M3's. Driving matters more, you don't get to try the same corner 20 times in a day and come back next time and try it another 20 times. You have to see the corner and chuck it in at 10/10ths of what the car is capable of and get ready for the next corner, if you're lucky you'll get more than 5 chances. A mountain of torque and a good tire in a lightweight chassis doesn't mean shit if you're tip-toeing through the slalom 10 mph slower then the guy who showed up in a >3,500lb Mercedes or Audi. |

OP do what you want it's your car and who cares how much you spend it's your money. If you want to beat him it's gonna cost you. The question is are you ready to spend that money? It's not just the power you are up against but rather the transmission. I use it's a lot because you are the owner not us. I say go for it then put up a video so we can all enjoy.
*rant* It really grinds my gears that people say "you bought the wrong car". Why even bother modding then? Why are people doing engine swaps??? Why are members boosting these cars over 500 HP? Why? Because they want to and can. *rant* So to answer your simple question troll or not I think 20k invested might do it. Talk to your local tuner shop or some of the vendors here and they will build it for you. Your car could be as fast as his but for half the cost. Is it worth it to you? Dream big and live life. |

Not to learn to never do it again... but to learn that mods don't add value and learn what mods make sense. Most will either learn that they love it or it's not for them. |

Depends the case. If you install things randomly, then you'll have a huge mess and no value. If you are doing a well thought selection of parts, then there is added value. Try to drive a stock car and a correctly modified one and you'll see a huge difference. You might not have many buyers who will appreciate this, but for sure there will be some. Besides, we are not modifying our cars to sell them. We modify them to increase the fun factor and satisfy ourselves with the drive. |

I certainly wouldn't want an 86 modded for drag racing or car shows no matter how 'perfect' it objectively was.
