Best thing I ever did, but I might be biased. Full car PPF

I wrapped mine in Xpel Stealth as well! I see we also have similar tastes in wheels:

IMO it's totally worth it, I had my friend do mine though so it saved a fair bit of money.

Nice to see another fully wrapped car! If people only knew how easy it is to maintain this film and the beating that it takes.

Just a low car. Every new car has awful paint, thanks to air quality regulations. My buddy just bought a brand new $90K bimmer three months ago, and didn't paint protect it. The poor car looks like it went through a shooting gallery.

My detailer tells me that starting in 2010 or so, auto paint systems became substantially weaker because of VOC regulations and water-based paints. I assume these regs apply to all makers, though some will have weaker/thinner paint than others, I have little doubt. For this reason, while he does not install PPF, he is a very strong advocate of it.

I know nothing about changes to painting regulations. That said, even if they are not as good now as what they were in the early 2000s, to say they are all awful is absurd. Have you ever seen the steps companies like Audi, Lexus and Porsche go through to paint their cars? Have you ever detailed a car from the 70s or 80s? Modern paint jobs are MILES better than those, even on some econoboxes.

The difference in regulation between now and then is that car companies are using water based paints, instead of solvent based paints in order to bring down the VOC contents of their paint facilities let out into the air. If you've ever stripped the paint off of a car pre and post the transition you'd feel a huge difference in the paint's ability to stick to the car. Companies can spend all the money they want to in order to make the paint look good, and feel durable, but water based paints have not gotten close to the level of durability offered by solvent based paints. The proof really is in the pudding, you can go on to any newer car forum and see the same complaints about paint quality. On the plus side they're not poisoning us as much anymore.

As far as your detailing example, the reason it's harder to detail a car from the 70's and 80's is due to oxidation not the durability in the paint. In fact removing those layers of oxidation are a real pain in the a**, because of how durable the paint is.

I can tell you detailing an E30 is much harder than modern cars. The paint was soft and easy to burn through. It seemed to be thicker, but also less resistant to damage.

You are correct. They older solvent based paints were softer and thicker. The newer water based paints and harder, but they are also brittle. They have very little flex and chip easily. The industry will, and has been, improving them drastically. It's not just solvents and VOC's that are being regulated that affect the paint. Other chemicals are being banned too.

It's in every industry, not just the car industry.

Hard to justify the $5000 to wrap the whole thing. About $2000 for high impact areas is somewhat more reasonable. The difference in price is wheels and suspension... And a lot of gas!
