I have the sliding one and like it. IMO, aesthetically the other arm rest looks better, but the sliding one is more functional.
It comes down to personal taste.

A DIY I posted with help from Agent 86: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...light=arm+rest

I have the sliding arm rest and I like it a lot. Not at all difficult to install. It's comfortable and the perfect height for my sitting position. It has 3 fixed stops, provides easy access to the entire compartment and when used with the OEM cup holder, creates an instant cover for 2 new compartments (i don't use the cup holders for beverages).

I like the design of the OEM piece above. It covers the whole space and is sleek, but I think it would be sweet if it had two holes at the rear for the cup holders so the cup holders could be used without lifting the arm rest. In this way it would be functional as a storage space, as a place to rest my arm and as a place to hold drinks. The door location is good for certain containers, but not all, especially not any fountain drinks or paper coffee containers.

I wonder if it would be hard to modify.

Agree, the doors are too big to hold my beer bottles so they shake all over the place and I'm always scared it'll shatter.

I installed my OEM armrest two weekends ago. I used 3M automotive body molding double sided tape. No drilling. Install looks flawless, the armrest is secure and does not move at all. I did have to dremel off the three plastic protrusions on the bottom of the armrest to get it to sit flush, but that was easy. The whole install took under 10 min.

Just wanted to throw this out as another option for those who would prefer not to drill.

Anyone on here order the replica?

The 3M sounds like a good idea. I wonder how it will hold up over years?

Well, another OE armrest install here.

As been mentioned, it matches really well and improves the interior appearance markedly.

Doesn't seem to have been mentioned, that the positioning of the latch is not great. You have to stretch your arm way back to unlatch it. Elbow hits the seat and it's not a comfortable or easy process.

Anyone have this issue? There's a huge gap in the passenger side. I went back and elongated the holes to get the thing closer in but seems this is just the shape of it

It seems like the alignment tabs aren't seated properly. I'd take it off and see which hole needs to be elongated.
