You probably aren't missing anything. I'm using an iPod Classic, not a thumb drive, and the radio has a much better interface for an iPod. I've never found a radio that does a decent job with a highly loaded thumb drive because it only plays as you describe. I'm guessing you would have to create your own play order by putting all the songs in one folder.

It's always been a little surprising to me that someone hasn't developed a head unit with a decent indexing scheme for thumb drives, or one that takes insertable media of some sort and does a full "iPod" function with it.

Closest thing I had was an OmniFi DMP100 I purchased from Woot in 2005, but no longer available although there is some open source support for it. It had a removable hard drive, and indexed the songs. I used it until 2012 when I sold the car it was installed in. It would even update itself in your garage if it could get a wifi connection to your host PC. I replaced the 20Gb drive with a 40GB then a 200Gb drive over the years.

what if the lightbulb had never been invented? How would we know when someone has a really good idea?

It'll be convenient replacing$250 of lug nut too. A couple of mine have rust and I've never gotten an impact near them. Took them on and off a bunch though for racing

Neato. I bought mine for 100 bucks off the classifieds here. If I have to replace them in a few years, so be it. Not a big cost to amoratize over a couple years.
