Please don't hate - LSx vrs 2Jz

**Please don't discredit me on my post count, check that join date **

I don't think there is a thread like this here, if I'm wrong, please forgive me...

On to it:

Target audience:
-DD (maybe not dedicated, but driven on the "nice days")
-Weekend Warrior (mix of hpde, autoX, maybe the occasional 1320)

(The guys' doing swaps that are focused on a particular event KNOW what they want and why)

Primary function here is balls to the walls, street legal fun. I am aiming for a modest 500whp. I plan for this to be a 'budget build', NOT a hack job, but I will save money where I can.

Personally, my conundrum lies between dropping in a LS2/t56 or a 2Jz. I am far more familiar with LSx's, but that alone is not enough to steer me away from, perhaps Japan's most coveted motor.

I am aiming at these two swaps because not only are they the 'more popular' swap route, but because I find them interesting and able to fit my power goals.

I am looking for input, a 'dollar to dollar' pro's and con's, if you will.

LSx:
-N/A (less headaches not dealing with F/I parts/tuning)
-Lighter (retain better factory balance)
-GTO T56 aligns with stock shifter

2Jz:
-Turboh (despite any frustration added by F/I, I absolutely love the sound of an EWG)
-Transmission requires modification
-Lag (results will obviously vary based on snail size)
-Heavier
-The sky [read: wallet] is the limit...

I am open to any and all input. Feel free to add anything here. If you've done a swap, are doing a swap- I am very interested in hearing why you went the route you did.

Thank you for participating.

LSx because everyone knows 2JZ power is just a high hp number while LS power is about actually going fast!

JK...obviously they are both awesome. I have a lot of LS experience and I have loved the gen III small block since they came out. I also have MkIV Supra experience so I've played with the 2JZ quite a bit and it's also bad ass...but to me less moving parts is just easier.

I think you'll spend less and have better reliability with that LS2...but that 500 rwhp number might be tough to attain though after trying to stuff it in an 86 on a budget.

500whp shouldn't be too hard with the 2JZ after its installed and dialed in.

As long as you have the $$$ and spirit to see either swap through to completion, you'll have an awesome car when you're done.

I hear ya.

And I am definitely not completely hung up on the "500" ponies mark. To be frank, most cars I've driven at that power were significantly heavier.

500 with an LSx is easy to hit and there are a TON of "recipes" on ls1tech to achieve that.

I'd say LSx for simplicity of parts, tons of current support, and the ability to interchange parts from motors that only recently moved to a different design.

The 2JZ is a widely supported motor, but the LS is hard to beat in terms of price / reliability / parts availability and ease.

The 2jz will hit 500whp on stock turbos, especially with e85. But if you planned on doing a single turbo or planned on developing the motor then I'm sure you could do a budget build with building the 2jzge and using an mk3 Supra transmission. The 2jzge doesn't have oil squirters, has smaller injectors and it has a distributor but if you are going stand alone management then maybe you could upgrade to coil packs. 2jz's from the IS300, GS300, NA Supra and probably other non-domestic imports would be much cheaper than the 2jzgte counterpart, and I believe the mk3 Supra transmission will hold 500whp easily.

Thanks to all for the feedback

Anyone have any estimations regarding cost? I ask not out of concern, but more so to get an idea.

I'll be putting together a spreadsheet in the next couple, trying to create a budget.

I've done LSx swaps, so the kid in me is leaning towards a 2j. Hopefully I'm not dorking my budget or reliability.

I made 430 hp 400 ft lbs to the wheels with a mild cam and some valve worked 243s on an ls1 with bolt ons and an ls6 intake. 500 is nothing magical.

Ls1tech.com is an excellent resource.

My thoughts exactly. Idk if some shop have an engine swap kit (plug-n-play) with everything sorted out.

Honestly? I love the Supra but there is a reason people put LSx into everything. Not just about power, but weight as well. the 2jz is heavy.

I understand that the 2j is a pig...but I look past that pretty quickly with how well it responds to mods. Not to say that an LSx is a slouch, but I think dollar for dollar, the 2j has an easier time surpassing each power level threshold.

I don't think so, and would be truly interested to see some comparisons....but modifying a 2jz is more expensive parts wise from what I have seen. Not to say ls motors are cheap to build.... but comparatively. All depends on actual goals.
