there are some good threads on this forum talking about the oil pressure and how it can be "solved" for higher than stock rpm driving for sustained periods of time. |

True but I am suggesting a con rod is not a foreign object.

So say, would 250whp be reliable with this engine, and for supporting mods.. say: catch can + oil cooler?

Revs and oil pressure are the issue not power levels. If you could make that power below 8k rpm and keep oil temps and pressures intact it would be ok... most likely.

As others mentioned the main engine issue is the low oil pressure on high rpms, but this is an effect and not the cause. The issue is that the engine is getting very hot and it is a reason that the stock tuning has unusually rich AFRs. It is clear that they were trying to keep it running cooler and not the b*shit that the tuning was wrong. An oil cooler will solve the issue partially. The revised engine (2016+) has internals with lower friction and this helps more. Last edited by nikitopo; 04-13-2017 at 03:36 AM. |

The thing you should ask yourself: what am I able to do if the motor does blow. I.E. can I afford to fix it, is it going to be a minor financial headache or am I going to have to eat Ramen for 5 months?

They have also snapped parts at higher HP. Some have run at 250 and over without issue. Your question can not be answered and any answer you do receive is speculation at best. Every single thing you do to the engine increases the risk of failure. The larger the change the larger the risk and potential impact from the failure. Oil coolers, good tunes, etc may reduce the risk a bit but they do not eliminate it and it remains higher with FI. As Bfrank said, are you prepared to accept that increased risk and able to deal with the results of catastrophic failure if it does blow up?

I think if you add a turbo it may deflect more bullets.

Revving to 8K has been fine [for me], doing it every now & then. I don't track or race my car though, so it's just for a split second when I do hit 8K. If my motor ever blows up, I'll be sure to let everyone know

All mass produced engines have a measurable premature failure rate. ALL of them. Oiling issues are the most common along with a few valves coming apart. There was also a tune issue on the first year of production cars that created knock under fast shifting at high rpm that damaged the direct injector seals, a few blew up from that. |
