Poor Bluetooth audio on phone only

I just got a new phone and paired it up with my car. When I'm playing iHeart radio over Bluetooth it sounds fine. But when I take a call what I hear is really choppy and hard to understand. My old phone did not have this issue. I tried my new phone on another car Bluetooth and it sounds great there. I went and erased all my phones from the car then re-bound them but still I have bad quality. I have to put the phone right up against the A/C controls before I get decent audio. Any ideas?

Worth asking too, do you also get bad quality not on BT but sitting in the car with the car on talking to the headset, if yes, might be interference.

The phone is an LG Aristo. No I didn't switch providers. I've tried it on a friend's car and it is crystal clear. I haven't tried it disconnected from the blue tooth yet.
