Question Strange problem with the horn.

Hello everyone,

Hoping someone has had this happen or can put some sense as to why its happening to me...


My BRZ has the STG2 UEL Tune from OFT. I have been running the tune for a few weeks now without any issues. I modified the launch control RPM to 4000. Tested it out when I first put the new tune on a few weeks ago, everything worked great.

Go to use LC today, and when I hit the 4k limiter, the horn goes off ever so slightly with each bump of the limit. Not as loud as if you actually use the horn.

This makes no sense logically to me, a buddy suggested maybe a fuse... I can hit the limiter in neutral and the horn doesn't do it, if I hit the limiter in 1st it goes off.

Are you sure it's the horn that is making the sound..??

You may consider pulling the horn fuse to see if it still happens.

Humfrz - you are right and I was wrong in assuming it was the horn, sounds just like a mini horn though!

In the thread I found and added below they say it is the accumulator in the clutch master cylinder.

Any idea how to replace/fix or how much it would be if I wanted the dealer to take a look?

Well, if the sound is made by the clutch master cylinder, the fix is simple ..... replace the master cylinder.

However, since very few people "fix" (rebuild) anything anymore, the dealer will most likely just want to replace the master cylinder plus charge you for bleeding the system and replacing the fluid.

How much would that cost ..?? The dealer's service advisor can give you an estimate. It will most likely be about twice as much as you think it should be.... I'd guess at around $300 (parts and labor).

OR, you can buy a remanufactured master cylinder and switch it out yourself and save some money.

Just last week, I took mrs humfrz's Saturn into the dealership to have it serviced and a TSB performed. They said it would be $98 to diagnose the problem. I told them that I wanted it fixed, not diagnosed, because I already know what the problem is and here is the TSB.

They insisted on the $98 charge (which would NOT be applied to the cost of the fix). I told them to forget it and took it up to the local shop (where I should have gone to start with) and Billy Bob fixed it for $30.

What CAN YOU DO ......

If it had anything to do with the clutch hydraulics you would hear it just by pushing the pedal with the engine off.

It's not the clutch master.

The clutch disengages really early in the throw. You are hearing the engine rev between disengaging the clutch and letting go of the throttle. That's all.

Found this video that shows another user with the problem.

Went out and did some more playing with the car, and it does in fact do it when I slip the clutch in 1st or 2nd.

I am wondering why it is doing it with the clutch all the way in, and just sitting stationary in first though...

Oh, that's different. Yeah, I remember reading the same about the clutch delay valve.

I thought yours was only making a noise during the upshift.
