Which header goes better with Perrin catback?

I am about to buy a Perrin CAT-BACK EXHAUST 3.0" RESONATED and I would like to know which one of this headers fits better:

- Gruppe-S Unequal length header UEL
- FT86 UnEqual Length Header

What I am looking? A better sound and keep performance. I am not looking to improve performance or gain HP since I won't be in a race or kind of I just want to feel the placer to drive my car and hear a good sound going out of there.

If only the catback and the headers are needed to achieve a good sound then perfect. If I am missing something else, like other part or maybe tune the car because is needed, please let me know.

Keep in mind I don't know to much about cars so any recommendation is more than welcome.

I have the Perrin 2.5" Resonated with the Speed Factory UEL catted headers. I love the sound of my exhaust: it has a loud warm-up, but then it quiets down and has a nice rumble to it. For what it's worth, I also have a Motiv Concepts overpipe and high flow cat front pipe. I installed it all at the same time, so I can't really say what exactly is contributing to the sound the most, but I love my setup.

This isn't my video, but I found a while back someone with my exact setup for the exhaust:

Can you post the URL to the headers you are using? I am about to buy a Perrin 3.0" but need a good headers and I like the sound from the video

If not going forced induction in the future I would just with the 2.5 Perrin cat back but I guess the price isn't that far off between the 2.5 and 3.0 so your call.

Just an FYI, any good quality aftermarket header will give you some power, +5-10 hp or so. I know you dont really care about that just letting you know. Those two are very good choices.

Also, you didnt mention a cat version, not sure if intentional or not and its not a problem, but the uncatted versions may give you a CEL light just because the cat is not there. This really dont mean much and will not put your car in a limp mode, it just something to think about.

The CEL light for this code can be turned off with a tune. A tune will get the most performance out of your new headers, maybe another +15-ish hp, but it does cost. You can get an OFT for about $500 new or find used ones for about $400. These are off-the-self tunes meaning they are built for the masses and not for just one car.

I know there are YouTube sound clips out there of a Perrin cat back with a those headers, these are very popular choices.

I guess I really should have said "curves" instead of "tune". I am sure that many people here could explain much better than I can exactly what a dyno is, I only know a small amount about it. It basically measures what HP and torque your car has at the wheels, and is used in tuning a vehicle (if you already knew that, I'm not trying to be condescending!). Everyone has a million different opinions about what is the best method, which ones are the best, etc., and I can't really comment on that as I have no experience there and I trust my tuner.

Let me scan them in and I will upload them for you!

3" eh.. I'm running the Nameless 4-2-1 header in 3" going to their 3" downpipe (with helmholtz resonator) mated up to the 3" Perrin resonated, catted catback. It sounds like a racecar when you get on it. Overall I think it sounds badass and I love it.

I can try to get some sound clips one of these days soon if you want.

I don't know to much about cars that's why I ask about them but know I have a new question do I really need a header? Will be enough with only the Perrin Catback to achieve a good sound? As I am learning yet I think a header will involve a frontpipe (I don't even know what that is but is what people told me about include headers) and maybe other things as well

Ok, I'll have to take care of this if for some reason it comes out but if it'll not damage the car in anyway then I'll do it afterwards.

Well, you really don't need a header. The exhaust will give you good sound. I would get the exhaust and drive with that for a couple weeks and think about the sound and if you would like to getting a header. The header will change the sound of the exhaust a little depending on the type. EL will sound like a normal car just a little more raspy and a little more throaty and UEL will give you that Subaru boxer rumble that synonymous with WRX and STIs. Get on YouTube and you can find alot of sound clips for exhaust and headers. This will give you a good idea if you want to change the headers out or not as you are mainly going for sound.

This is whats going on under the car.


The Perrin will change the midpipe and muffler sections. The frontpipe and overpipe is not something that needs to be swapped out with your choice of headers.

The cat or catalytic converter is what burns off all the left over gases that are are not burnt up during combustion, its an emissions thing keeps the earth clean. There is a system to monitor the efficiency of the cat. When that efficiency is no longer met the check engine light or CEL will come on. So when you get a header that has no cat the computer will think the cat is not working and illuminate the CEL. If you look at your choice of header there is two screw holes, this is where the monitoring system will go. In between the two holes would be the cat. The only monitored cat in our cars is the one on the header. The one on the front pipe is not monitored. Click Here and scroll down to the FT-86 headers there is a catted and uncatted, the bump at the bottom between the holes is the cat.

There is no worry with an uncatted version other then the CEL being on, it will not damage anything. Ohh another one is, if you state requires inspections to re-register your car, there is a chance it will not pass due to no cat in the system and your CEL being on. Some states dont have inspections.

A tune will give you better power and the car will feel just a whole lot better but in your case its something that can wait.

Get your exhaust, drive it around a bit and see how you like the sound. Sample some YouTube clips on how header exhaust setups sound. Then, if you feel like it get the headers. Drive around for a while like that and if the need for more power kicks in get a tune. You will be ok.

Yup. There is no cat on the midpipe or the muffler sections. The only cats in the system are on the headers and frontpipe. In the diagram, look at the frontpipe, that bulge on the left side is the cat and that square looking thing on the right is a Helmholtz resonator. On the midpipe that bigger section is a resonator. A catback changes piping after the cat, in this case the one on the frontpipe. You will not be replacing anything from the front pipe forward for a catback.

The Perrin has a resonator on the midpipe and it has larger piping and routed a little better. Then the muffler section, smaller then the stock muffler.
