I hope it's nothing bad. It's not a constant thing and barely noticeable.

My dad said it's probably just the regular idling noise.

Regular idling noise to me would be the crickets.

Next time you hear it happening, try recording it since it may not happen when you're at the service department.

Yeah, phone might pick it up. Even better if you have access to a dedicated audio recorder with dual mics.

Or, let someone who has been driving twins for a long time take a listen and see what they think.

Here's an example. It starts 7 seconds in. It sounds like the pitch changes but that's just me moving my phone closer to where I think it's coming from.

That is definitely a strange sound. Almost sounds like it's a heater fan or something. I'm assuming all HVAC is turned off?

Is it related to clutch position? Only happens with clutch pressed in?

All HVAC is turned off, and that recording was while the clutch was fully released, not depressed at all. Feet weren't on any of the pedals. Car was in neutral.

And it cycles on and off? How frequently is the cycle?

It sounded in the recording like it stayed on and did not cycle off.

Yeah. I'd say it typically goes for 10-20 seconds and then doesn't happen for a while. But it's kind of random. I've only noticed it once or twice while actually driving. Usually I hear it when I start the car and fiddle with my phone or something before going into gear and going.

Let me know if I should just create a regular thread about this lol. It's veering dangerously off off-topic.

I did go back out again just now for 5-10 mins and tried starting it, stopping, etc. 3 or 4 times.

Basically the same thing happens. I start the engine, it sounds fine for about 5-10 seconds, then it starts that low hum somewhere behind the driver seat. Then it goes for about 20-30 seconds. Then it stops.

I tried leaving it running, walking around a few times, and checking the back/opened the trunk. I don't think I could even hear it from back there. There may have been a slight rumbling but I thought it was just the exhaust.

Haha exactly.

Yeah I might just have to do that :/

I made a thread in the BRZ section anyway just in case someone else has noticed it.

edit:

I was actually thinking when I wrote that post.. The hum reminds me of speaker feedback. You know how when speakers aren't grounded properly sometimes they have some feedback that's like a hum? Wondering if that could be it. Maybe a wire is loose from the factory?
