I think it depends on your driving style,,if you redline every gear you not gonna get good mileage.
Because the OP lives in the real world? Wanting a car that's usable does not discount wanting a car that's fun. He's not asking to get 50 mpg, just better than 17. Most of us need to find a balance and the twins do that quite well.

Not sure what your corn setup has to do with anything. You get a third less distance on a tank of gas, but you're not paying a third less per gallon - you're paying more for less convenience.

I can get about 320 miles before the gas tank comes on, my daily commute is about 30 miles, 5 or so in HEAVY stop and go traffic, the rest is open freeway at about 75-80 mph. Very little city driving, maybe 10% of my total miles.

Real world, calculated example is available in the first post of my Owner's Journal here, tank by tank. It's a little behind because I'm over 100,000 miles now, but it wouldn't be significantly different. (Correction: Had a minute, so I've caught it up and fixed numbers below)

Bottom line, my previous daily driver (A 2001 Chevy Astro) averaged 17.5MPG over 280,000 miles of mixed driving. The cost of "fuel savings" takes into account the difference between regular vs. premium based on the cost differential between premium and regular at each fill-up.

Right now I'm at the following, with a typical 80% Highway 20% local split:

Lifetime: 100,791.3 Miles Driven at 33.04 MPG
Savings over previous Daily Driver (2000 Chevy Astro): $6,714.10 and 2046.53 Gallons of Fuel

Car was purchased in 05/2012, I'm saving about $112 a month in fuel costs.

I do have an AT, which gets marginally better fuel economy because of better highway gearing at the top end.

For our 88,000 touring miles, I went with the fix-a-flat and onboard air pump.

Never had a flat tire on the road.

I needed the trunk space ...... mainly for mrs humfrz stuff. Hell, I'd wear the same pants and shirt for a week ...... nobody saw us twice anyway ...... and most of the driving was top down.....which blew away most of the stink ......

The people burning moonshine are really proud of it and get mad when you question them.

I quickly learned they are a little sensitive (on another thread)

Perhaps their folks are corn farmers, I'm not certain.

OP gets 17 mpg in his Escape, that's worse than the EPA average in any trim. We can only assume he will do worse than EPA average in an 86, in fact 17mpg leads me to believe that it should be considered straight city mileage.

https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymo...d_Escape.shtml

Therefore I would expect OP to get straight city mileage in the FR-S, only ~21mpg.

Sorry if you bought the car already, you won't be saving much unless there is something wrong with the Escape causing poor fuel economy.

Range will likely be the same, I routinely fill up ~10 gallons with ~260 miles on the tripodometer when commuting.

To the guy who gets >17 mpg on track, you must drive slow as hell, I'm barely above 10 mpg.

Everything has a cost dude.. In my area $3.39 per gallon that can only give me 260mpg while i can do 200 for $2.3 and more power???? If you want good mileages, you will just have to drive it slow and shift every 3000rpm. No such thing as in buying a fun car with exact same gas mileage everytime on your meter. Less convenience? I just go to the gas station like everybody else, and I pass the corn station almost everyday.

If OP just want fun car over 17mpg and not doing 100mph on highway, I am sure this car has good mileage on the highway.

I get 21-24 MPG on E85.
You'll be fine, even after you get I/H/E, and a tune.. which is a requirement as an 86 owner.

Who sells an I/H/E, and should I wait until my warranty is expired?

A pruis with coilovers and lighter wheels with better tires can actually be a fun car to drive.

The best I've done in my brz was 39 mpg all highway. I drove at least 5 mph under the speed limit because I was driving over 1200 miles and it wouldn't have made a difference anyways. I'd show you my fuelly but it is messed up, I missed a fill up somewhere. I normally average about 30-32 mpg, completely depending on where I shift. If I shift closer to 2000 rpm I get better mileage than if I shift closer to 4k rpm.

Your don't realize just how good the gas mileage is with a twin until you compare it to a full size vehicle. I used to own an H2 Hummer. 8mpg. I'm being serious. It was ridiculous. Frequent fill ups and $70-80 each time.

Trust me. The Twins are great with fuel economy. It's all relative.

Don't miss the Hummer at all. Well .... not that hummer.
