I think in VA and MD you get some type of sales tax pickup as well. It made it more worth it to do the trade-in versus dealing with a private seller.

Having just bought my own '13 at a similar price (21k miles), I'd say your chances are pretty good. I shopped for several months and all the BRZs I bookmarked were gone pretty quick.
Only thing that keep postings up a long time are things you don't have - rebuilt titles, lots of miles, modifications... To maximize your return I would say try Craigslist. Sure, there's more risk but also a bigger customer base. Another poster pointed out that some people look just to look... but how many will do that if they can't drive stick? Here in Socal, I haven't gotten a single legit person interested in taking a look at my car at $15k. The twin market has crashed... maybe it will bounce back once they discontinue making them. (IE sk2)

I sold my 2009 Si using Car Gurus and Craigslist. Got two inquires from Car Gurus and 1 of them bought the car.

Well there's your problem. Drive it up to the Midwest and sell it quick for $18K. You are probably right smack in the middle of the biggest concentration of them in the country.
