There's a new Alpine sports car out, and it's coming to challenge the likes of the Alfa Romeo 4C and Porsche 718 Cayman.

Part of Renault's resurrected Alpine brand, it looks pretty much identical to the Vision Concept that debuted last year, bar some minor nips and tucks that push it closer to the assembly line.

Baptized the A110, which "reflects the timeless principles of compact size, light weight and agility that made the success of the Berlinette", it features a full aluminum platform and upper body, with obvious benefits in weight and handling.

Despite unveiling their first product in decades, Alpine are keeping key specifications hidden away, up until the new A110 makes its public debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, on March 7, at 1:15 pm CET (7:15 am EST).

However, previous intel tells us that the all-new Alpine A110 could feature a 1.8-liter turbo'd four-banger for propulsion, developing between 250 and 300 horses. Expect it to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in an estimated 4.5 seconds.

Alpine have already started taking orders for the Premiere Edition of the sports car ever since late last year, asking a €2,000 ($2,115) deposit to secure one of the first cars.

Alpine has finally revealed in full the new A110 Berlinette, a lightweight mid-engined sports car destined to rival the likes of the Porsche Cayman and the Alfa Romeo 4C.

The new A110 is based on an all-aluminum platform with the also aluminum body bonded, riveted and welded to it in order to provide a very rigid, yet light basis for the new French sports car.

How light you say? Well, the new A110 tips the scales at only 1,080kg (2,380lbs) with no options fitted. Combined with the turbocharged 1.8-litre unit that makes 247hp and 236 lb-ft (320Nm) of peak torque, the new Alpine gets a really exciting power-to-weight ratio of 231hp/tonne, enabling it to accelerate from zero to 62mph (100km/h) in 4.5 seconds and top out at an electronically limited 155mph (250km/h).

The engine is paired to a Getrag seven-speed wet-clutch DCT ‘box, with gear ratios specifically tailored for the A110’s needs. There are three driver modes (Normal, Sport, Track) which adapt the engine, the gearbox, the steering, the ESC threshold, the exhaust note and the driver display according to the selected setting.

Alpine has also worked hard on providing the new A110 with optimized aerodynamics, including a completely flat floor and a working rear diffuser, combining low drag with real downforce. The A110’s Cx value is just 0.32, one of the lowest in the sports car segment.

The lightweight chassis employs double wishbones for the suspension front and rear while the all-aluminum brake calipers were developed by Brembo. Additionally the rear braking system features an integrated parking brake actuator, a world first, saving this way 2.5kg off the total weight of the car. The lightweight 18-inch forged aluminum wheels were provided by Otto Fuchs while Sabelt developed the one-piece bucket seats that weigh just 13.1kg each.

The Alpine A110 will hit the market late this year, initially in its limited Premiere Edition, with only 1,955 cars planned for production. If you haven’t already ordered one, then you’re in bad luck as Alpine says that all left-hand drive examples are already spoken for, with only a small number of right-hand drive models remaining available in the UK. Reservations for the Japanese market will open in the coming weeks.

The two-door coupe has a mid-mounted 1.8-liter turbocharged four-pot delivering 247 horses and 236 pound-feet (320 Nm) of torque, which, combined with its lightweight design, allows for the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in just 4.5 seconds, with top speed being electronically capped at 155 mph (250 km/h).

There's no manual gearbox on offer, as the A110 gets a standard 7-speed dual-clutch transmission driving the rear wheels. It has three driving modes to select from - Normal, Sport and Track, which adapt the engine, steering, gearbox, ESC, and exhaust mode for each specific scenario.

The production car stays true to the Vision Concept and encompasses design features that were first used on the original A110 of the 1960s.

Enthusiasts have high expectations when it comes to the new French sports car, but before being able to take it out for a ride, it's videos like this one posted by Evo that will answer some of your questions. In this case, Alpine's chief designer, David Twohig, was kind enough to point out a few interesting things about the A110.

My question is why wouldn't Renault/Nissan co-develop this alpine sport with the next generation Z car to save R&D money? We all know that a new Z concept is confirmed for Tokyo this year and that Nissan has previously hinted that the next gen could be smaller and lighter. I wouldn't be surprised to see a re-skinned version of this as the new Z concept. It would piss purists off with no manual and turbo 4 but Goshn's all about cost savings and profit margin.

Don't forget Mitsubishi it could be a 3-way thing now.

True, I almost forgot Nissan acquired them but I think Mitsu's gone all in on SUVs. They just used their most logical nameplate, eclipse, on a crossover so I don't see them coming out with a sports car concept too. Unless they bring back the 3000GT/GTO but I don't see that happening unfortunately.

They have officially and publicly made it very clear that they are out of the performance/sportscar market forever. Now of course that could change but it would be many many years before we saw it.
