Actually what you describe qualifies now as "old school" thinking. My generation pretty much invented living in debt up to your eyeballs.

Which GF would that be ....... surely not the one that lives in "that little apartment" (your words).

10M ....... ?? Are you saying 10 million dollars ..... ??

And what neighborhood is that ..... ??

(I wonder if Canada would accept my WA real estate brokers license ..... ??)

Not that I'm in a house that goes for as much as you describe, but... both cars are garaged, yay for having no yard of green weeds that demand way too much time, and my commute is now 1/4 what it used to be, and half of it is walking.

Living right in a big ass city isn't always what you describe (and trust me - I'm NOT a city person... but I prefer the city to the suburbs by far...) Ironically, the suburbs are the only place where people tell you how you have to keep your yard and paint your house and what kind of cars you can have and where they can park when and whether you can even work on the dang thing...

Only if you live in a condo some or some lame HOA. I will never, ever, live in one of those communities with all kinds of anal rules.

I couldn't even imagine working in this kind of environment. What type of work is/was it, may I ask?

Welcome to most of the suburbs... There are occasional properties without an HOA, but they're hard-ish to come by - at least near a big city. And for what I do, the city is where I find work. It really was the neighbors though... even without HOA rules, so many jerks. Complaining about me working on my car in the garage (allowed). Complaining about having a clean, functional car in the driveway... when we already had 2 in the garage... really, just obnoxious.

I don't mind people preferring the 'burbs, but it wasn't that "somewhere between city and country" we imagined... it was just miserable all around.

Most of us are in corporate IT. I used to support desktops so I'm at the low end of the pyramid, people I grew up with are either in engineering, software development, quality assurance, or project management. For them there's always something to prove in life it seems (i.e. job, money, car, house, etc). I can see years down the road they'll compete on who has the smartest kids lol! Could be an Asian thing I'm not sure.

I think some of the most humble people I've met over the years are business owners or usually older folks that have worked their arses off all their lives and made it. Somehow the wealthy self employed real estate agents don't fall into this category, those are cocky AF.

Sometimes I get so involved with my 3 youngest granddaughters, I don't think about my oldest granddaughter, who lives back in Missouri. She just turned 13 this week ......

I have a buddy who lives in an HOA in North Carolina somewhere. They wouldn't let him have a garden. A garden!

I am brutally hungover this morning. Some friends from the army stopped by unannounced last night and we got a bit carried away. What really sucks is that I'm going to have to live on coffee and Final Fantasy IX today

At least I managed to get dinner started already, so all I need to worry about is defrosting a few buns.
