They can probably re-engineer a retro EK Civic (like Toyota with the Series 70 Land Cruiser remake), but the driving position is gonna suck since they probably can no longer achieve a low EF/EG Civic hoodline even if they decide to try. Then again it would be much better than this new Civic abomi-nation.

The new Civic seems like a good car, just not in the way that the 80-90s civics were.

I wouldn't mind driving the family in one of these if it wasn't so flashy. At least the Focus RS has a little restraint.

Too flashy.

And everything is elevated; it looks like it's on stilts. From some angles looks more like a CUV than a hot hatch.

Honda just need to copy the modern VW Golf styling and then instant nostalgia.

From everything I have read about it, looks like all the stuff on the car is functional.
Looking forward to seeing the reviews.

I wonder if they could have skipped the spoiler and used a solution similar to that used on the 911R.

Honda's New Civic Type R Is The Hot Hatch We've All Been Waiting For

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfeNzZxgTHE[/ame]

Quote:
This is the new Honda Civic Type R we've all been waiting for, and it's finally been revealed at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.

Hot hatch enthusiasts were excited when Honda revived the Civic Type R two years ago. But short lived as it was, that was just a stopgap.

Based on the latest tenth-generation Civic, the new Type R packs a 2.0-liter turbo four tuned to deliver 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. That's hardly a big increase over the outgoing model, which boasted the same torque figure with ten fewer horses.

Fortunately the new Civic Type R promises to improve in other areas, including a 38% increase in torsional rigidity. The suspension is also retuned “to minimize torque steer and maximize sporty handling,” with a MacPherson strut setup at the front and independent multi-link system at the back.

Power is channeled to the road through a six-speed manual with rev-matching function for perfect blip-shifts. There's also a new driving-mode system that tailors the adaptive dampers, steering rack, shift feel, and throttle response to the occasion – with a new Comfort setting that ought to smooth out rougher surfaces when Sport or +R settings aren't called for.

As visually arresting as the previous Type R was, the new model encompasses a new aero kit that looks no less extreme, but perhaps a bit better resolved with the base model's jet-fighter styling. Honda promises “best-in-class balance between lift and drag” for better stability all around.

Best of all, the new Honda Civic Type R will be a global product – and that includes the United States for the first time in the model's history. Production is set to kick off this summer at Honda's UK manufacturing site in Swindon. In the interim, we hope the Japanese automaker will hit us with some performance figures in the near future.

I've got news for you. The four HUGE black air vents (2 on front bumper, 2 on rear bumper) are 100% fake. Doesn't take a first hand viewing to notice that they're blocked off (outside of one tiny section of the drivers side front one). I mean come on man, those are the biggest "vents" on the whole car and they're fake. Even in it's darkest days the Ford Mustang never did something that tacky, lol.

According to the designer

Every feature of the exterior design of the car has a meaning, and all of the car’s features are functional.” We’re picking up what you’re laying down, Daisuke. All those vents and ground effects and strakes work and stuff.

It doesn't matter what he says in that article. Look at the black trim. No air flows through it. Nevermind the fact that those pieces are identical to the ones found on the regular Civic hatchback, also non functional.

Do you believe your eyes or some BS fed to journalists by the car's designer?

Having said that, a few observations/concerns:

1. No Honda Sensing or Heated Seats for the North American model. I know, people will say "wtf dude race car!", but no matter how many Type-R badges they put on it, it's still a hot hatch. It needs to be a competitive daily driver and fun car.

2. Canadian press release states it will start in the "$40's". That is Golf R, STI and Focus RS money.

3. While the increases in chassis rigidity are impressive, I find that most hot economy cars ride poorly (excluding the Golf R). Because they start on squishy economy car platforms, manufacturers have to crank up the rigidity and add stupid amounts of damping to get it to handle well. The net result is a compromised ride compared to something that was supposed to be a sporting vehicle from the ground up.

Who knows, it could surprise us with how well it drives. The plus side is it shows there is still a pulse over at Honda.

It's pretty clear that it's not all functional, but I am going to give them a pass. It's not my cup of tea, but it is consistent with the existing Civic Hatch design language. It would look weird for the base Civic hatch to have all the aggressive plastic cladding and the Type-R to be a toned down version.

Then again...maybe someone with good PhotoShop skills could replace the plastic cladding with sheet metal for us?

Maybe its function is to excite fanboys?
