Great topic!
The BRZ is my first sports car. Before, I had a Mini Cooper (non S). The Mini was great for city driving and parking since I live in a European capital city, but a bit boring. The BRZ seemed like a great car, and was one of the few new RWD cars within my budget. I considered the MX-5, but needed something more practical. I've always seen the BRZ as a first step towards something faster, but the more I drive it, the more content I feel with it. This especially after having tracked it. It will take years before I grow out of the BRZ on the track, and a few more years before I dare to drive something more expensive on track. As insurance doesn't cover trackdays, the BRZ is as expensive as I dare to go. For now, the BRZ doubles as my daily (and only) driver. In a few years I might get something else for the weekdays and either turn the BRZ into a track car or look towards something else. In that case, I would probably get an older model Cayman or 911. Bonus pic of my BRZ with the new rims

1984 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 M5
2000 Pontiac Trans Am M6 2004 Ford Mustang GT Vert A4 2001 Pontiac Trans Am A4 2016 Subaru BRZ M6 The BRZ handles the best of anything I've had but is obviously the slowest thing I've ever owned by far. Oddly enough it's also the most... problematic. I've had nothing but weird "quirks" with it that make me question it's reliability. |

I am a motorcycle guy. I do not even like cars, not really. I have always had a truck, I have had my current truck since I bought it new in 06.
I have had a couple Corollas as daily drivers and an 02 Civic. Currently, in addition to my truck I have a 89 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, 01 BMW Z3 Coupe & a 06 Mazda Miata. Everything is stock. Seems kind of crazy that with the addition of the 86 I effectively have 3 two seat manual transmission cars. I had a couple company brass visitors in town a few weeks back & had to borrow my moms Avalon to chauffer them around. |

I just picked up a CPO 14 FRS with only 11k miles and I am really enjoying it.
When I was in college I had a 77 280Z rust bucket and then a nice 73 240Z. That was back in 1986, I'm not THAT old. This FRS reminds me of those. I went thru a 4 wheelung phase when I lived in Colorado. Now on the east coast I've had several hatches, 2003 Mini Cooper S, 12 GTI, 15 Focus ST. My kids are in school now so who needs 4 doors? The FRS is a blast to drive. The hatches have their appeal, but the understeer gets old, and how many reverse donuts can you really do on a snowy day before it gets old? This forum is awesome. Lol. Well of course there was a lot more money invested in the production of quality parts that go into a Porsche (A 2008 TT was 160K.) So comparing the two as a manufacturing rating is difficult and unfair. However, If I was to rate on "fun" factor. They are different means but equal results. The BRZ also has many "Porsche" driving qualities in the feedback and joy it communicates to its driver. Not bad considering a price difference of 130K., It is also quite sprite in speed for a NA 2 liter four cylinder.. (2017) |

1.) What has been your sports car progression?
This was fun to answer: '94 Acura Integra, '96 JDM Honda Del Sol, '04 Euro Lexus IS200, '06 Euro Honda Accord Type-S, '13 Subaru BRZ, '16 Subaru STI 2.) What are your eventual goals? I can't say I have a goal... I just enjoy great Japanese sports cars, mainly sports sedans due to their fun-to-drive nature and usability. 3.) Where does the BRZ fit in this progression for you? The BRZ to me was an homage purchase to my first car, the '94 Integra. I LOVED that car and all I had was a LS non-vtec. The driving experience was great as you needed to drive the car in high revs to get the most out of it, with great handling. The BRZ took those ingredients and turned the volume up to 11 with more power and the RWD. In the end though, the BRZ taught me that even though I love a great sports car I really enjoy sports sedans more. When I got my BRZ I intended to keep it till it died; however, after 4 years of driving it I started to miss the functionality that sports sedans had provided in the past... Basically my car was useless as a family car due to space so the family was always loading into the wife's car. I stumbled upon my '16 STI when taking the BRZ in for its 60k service and saw the STI in the used car lot. I had never really considered seriously owning a STI; however, it made sense to look at making the change. I'm glad that I made the change as it fits my needs. It also took me from the place of, "I can't wait to modify this and that" to "Wow, I'm pretty happy with this car as it is!" The BRZ provided a very pure and fun driving experience and I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to own one. It was everything I hoped and brought back the feelings I had towards that first Integra. Driving it left me smiling, and that is something only a few cars can provide. It was a stepping stone into the Subaru family at this point in my automotive life I don't feel like I'll be leaving Subaru for a while! I got my wife a Forester not long before stumbling on the STI. My STI has won me over as the best car I've ever owned due to the power, performance, handling, and ability to haul friends and family. It is also the only car I've owned where I know I'd buy another one. Why? Because I'm not only smiling while driving, I'm laughing my ass off having fun! Thanks, Kimsey

My first fun car was an 89 CR-X DX with a 5pd. Dog slow, but I lowered it and slapped on a set of bronze 5zigen wheels and a SiR wing... Loved that car, learned to drive stick on it and generally beat it to death constantly. Sold it with 240k on the clock and it still ran great, no idea how it survived me.
Next was a 90 CR-X si in Barbados yellow... Y49. Bought it with a lunched trans and swapped in a hybrid with a zc 1-4, stock 5th and stock fd. Much quicker than the DX, but still slow. Still drove it like a knob constantly. Sold that one with 225 on the clock, no idea how that one survived either. One of very few cars I regretted selling. 3rd one was my '00 Miata... Holy crap, rwd. Total revelation. Still slow, but I could go slowly *sideways*. Stock with a roll bar and a sparco sprint seat. Had way too much fun with that car. Sold it because I needed the money and bought a $700 '90 Miata. Beat that poor thing like it owed me money and did all kinds of crap to it. Frankenstein'd a motor together from 3 donors, lame Rust-Oleum roller paint job, ripped out the soft top... Spent damn near all of my time on that damn thing. Did my 1st auto x with it. Amazing car, but a major pita to keep running and just beat to hell. Sold that one after i bought my dad's '98 m roadster. Didn't actually want the thing, I was looking for an e39 m5 at the time, but he kept offering it for cheaper and cheaper until I couldn't say no. Loved it. Way more comfort, way more power, and not a total eyesore. Had some quirks, and I always felt like I could hurt it if I beat on it like the miatas, but it never let me down. Sold it to my father in law, he had fallen in love with it when I started dating his daughter. After a couple years without one I started missing a sporty car. After a bit of searching I picked up a nice '00 prelude 5spd... Boooooring. Nice enough car, good motor, totally uninspiring. The trans took a dump in prelude and it pissed me off so I started looking at new stuff. Found that I could get a decent deal on a brz, and a local dealer had a limited in stock in the right color with the right trans so here I am. Pretty sure the BRZ is the best of them, not sure I like it better than my POS old Miata, but it's probably as close as I'm going to get in new car. 2000 Honda Prelude 5MT
2002 Lexus IS300 5AT 2015 Subaru BRZ Limited 6MT - Current weekend car 2000 Civic Si 5MT 2006 Infiniti G35 6MT - Current daily driver -I've had mostly sporty compact cars. Eventually I would like to get into autocross with this car. No other significant plans for now since I enjoy this car as is, and want to keep its personality intact. I bought this car after selling the Lexus (it was a good time to sell). At the time I went through a few different cars and was feeling nostalgic for a car like the Honda Prelude (My first manual car, and one of my favorites). I wanted a lightweight, sporty, manual, coupe, but I didn't want to deal with older abused cars. I ended up having an EM1 Civic Si as a daily for a short time (surprisingly a very fun car). Currently I daily a G35 Coupe (with is probably the closest I've owned to a true sports car), which I bought to relieve the BRZ from daily driving. I bought it because this may be my only chance to own a car as distilled as this. |
