What I meant was that the ND is capable of accelerating out of a slow 2nd gear corner at 3k rpm while the 86 falls flat on it's face. I did not mean that it made more horsepower. Weight is absolutely a big factor.

The point of my post was more that the video shows the 1.5L miata, but the 2.0L US spec miata is clearly a better performer than the 86.

Yep at 3k rpm, the 86 has a lot of work to do. I was watching once a racing driver which had the same issue and then he started down-shifting on 1st gear. However, his car was a limited edition 14R60 which had a longer 1st gear.
