If you have a cheap Mobo it likely doesn't support it. Cheap RAM and processors won't either usually

Mobo has built in tools for it. I have 16gb of Ballistix Tactical ram and my CPU is a black edition, ie, unlocked, ready for OC. Wasn't even anything substantial. Just 100mhz.

When I was into this sorta stuff I had to read a ton of Taiwanese magazine hardware reviews (long before there were much English sites dedicated to this stuff, [H]ardOCP was still in its infancy) on which brands and models of mobo and ram offered the best stability and performance for OC even tho they might be using the same chipsets and such.

Buying computer stuff like CPUs is worse than buying fruits and veggies you don't really know how good it is inside and you can't cut it open either, cuz they'll all look the same anyway lol!

Well in Japan, casinos are illegal other than pa-chin-ko, so it's pretty popular over there.

Yeah, I'm kinda set on staying AMD at this point, so I'm considering my options for a new CPU anyhow. The FX-8350 and 8570 are both on sale for under 280 CAD. Thing is, AMD just dropped (or is about to) their new Ryzen line which looks great, but I'd need a new mobo and ram to go along with it, so I'm not totally sold yet.

Physics dictate that lighter is better, but it's still only weight. Torque/power, spring rates, dampers, etc have a higher impact on performance. The vast majority of people would never be able to tell the difference
With one exception...

Any number of tests have shown minimal acceleration advantage (significant only for racing), mixed results for cornering because cheap light wheels tend to flex (light and stiff is expensive!), and subjective ride quality due to more responsive suspension and taller side walls...

However rotational mass has a very noticeable effect on braking... as much as 20 feet or so reduction on 60-0 distance. That can make a very big difference to an average driver.

The buy in is big, which is a tough pill to swallow given that I just bought into the AM3/+ system.

I have not been following along on your components... but most are pretty decent these days. If you want to go the overclocking route, cooling is one of the biggest factors to success. Heat generation is dictated by power consumption as a square of frequency (e.g. doubling speed has 4X effect on power/cooling).

I am glad you are enjoying your new system, but I fear you are on the never ending treadmill I saw my sons on... there is ALWAYS an upgrade!!!

I suggest openhardware monitor for watching heat as you can put a widget on your desktop to watch important numbers. Unless you have a hardware option to show heat

I'm an AMD/ATI fanboy going all the way back to the EGA and VGA "wondercards" that allowed you to run graphics on the old IBM monochrome monitors.

I've dropped out of the GPU arms race years ago. With AMD dropping the Ryzen line that means "last year's top of the line" GPUs will drop to mid-range pricing where about where I try to stay.

I'm currently running a R9 390 card, and frankly can't find anything it won't run at 1920x1080 (or 5760X1080), and that's on a 5 year old i7-2600 CPU, so I don't see any reason to upgrade right now. For example, I just completed DOOM 2016, and it had no issues running at 60fps with my setup.

My next video upgrade will cause me to have to also change out my PC, because it still runs BIOS instead of UEFI, and video manufacturers have moved on to where they no longer support BIOS for the most part.

I just made the switch to the RX480. Really pleased with it now that I've tinkered some. Dropped my resolution from 1440p to 1080p and I'm seeing 70fps as my average. I think the CPU is bottlenecking some, but, again, not sure I want to spend the 250ish on an FX-8350 (I think that's the one, anyways) when the Ryzen lineup looks like it'll be an intel killer at that price point. It's basically between me spending 250 on an almost outdated CPU or dropping 650ish for the Ryzen stuff, plus a new case, since I'm way over microATX
