Differantial
Hey guys
So i realised that my diff has some backlash. Which my tuner and mechanic confirmed as well. Its not an urgent problem to fix but replacing the diff would cost around $2000. I was wondering if anyone knows how to fix the backlash? Cheers Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

How much is "some"? Some is expected and normal in a RWD system but if excessive then it could be a problem.
Here is some stuff you can look at. http://www.cusco.co.jp/en/news/toyot...z_rear_di.html

Well, like Tcoat said, some backlash is normal.
How many miles on your car .. ?? Do you have any major power mods .. ?? Is it still under warranty .. ?? Do you notice it under normal driving conditions .. ?? Can you notice (hear/feel) a "clunk" when starting off after a gear change .. ?? Come back. humfrz |

If it doesn't make noise it's fine.

Seconded here. If it's not humming at speed or clunking you're probably ok. Setting up/installing a diff is covered in many videos on YouTube and even a few DIY articles on this site. (video below). If you're going to fix it yourself and the whole thing is hosed. A used diff + housing and all the rest goes for about $500 on Ebay. It's a direct swap. If it's just the Ring and pinion/final drive + seals is going to run you about $1400 including labor to fix (unfortunately, I know this first hand). If you're suspicious about this TAKE IT TO A SPECIALIST or a mechanic that works on differentials all day. Someone that can diagnose it quickly and source parts just as fast. This will likely save you money over a general mechanic who sees a diff 1x month or less. At 52 seconds they show the backlash being adjusted. Backlash is a political term.
On here, we're not allowed to go there. |

The car has about 45 thousand miles on it.
And yes after a gear change i hear a clunk on first, second and sometimes third gear. The clunk is worse when the car is cold but it almost happens all the time Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Yeh no backlash at all in the drivetrain is no good. When 4 wheeling my LandCruiser its needed to prevent binding of the u-joints and pinion gear. When i lock my front and rear diffs no backlash would be bad.

Wasn't clunk when engaging in gear more related to our multi-piece drive-shaft? IIRC some reported clunking gone if installed single-pice aftermarket ones.

Absolutely not. I remember one person who claimed that but I didn't call bullshit because I didn't want to get into it with him. If there's any lash at all between the transmission and the diff, something is very wrong; dangerously wrong.
