Just got my P0016 code. Engine was slightly warm as it was around lunch time.

2013 Subaru BRZ @ 45,700 miles
VIN: 6031XX
Miami, FL

Car seems to idle and run perfectly fine. I'm assuming it's the sensor or ECU that needs to be replaced.

I'll contact the dealer later regarding this.

P0016 code a few nights ago... did a fresh oil change with a sludge treatment. Hoping that is was just a bit of junk... took it to the dealership to clear the code... was down the road not even 5 min and it came back... apointmwnt on monday for " Diagnostics"... hoping it's just a sensor and nothing serious like needing to have the cam sprocket replaced...

2014 Subaru BRZ @ 59,300 miles
VIN: got to go look, ill update later
East coast SC

Car seems to idle and run perfectly fine (other than the limp mode grr) just like last member... . Fingers crossed its just the sensor....

I'll update after monday when the dealership has had their day with it...

aaaand... less than 1000 kms after getting the ECU replaced... the car started jerking slighly at partial throttle in 2nd to 4th gear... got worse to the point first gear kept jerking... then... as i went to the dealership to enquire about some other parts, i couldn't leave.. the idle started hunting idle and would not accelerate. i think i've got the direct injector seals problem. good thing it did this at the dealership as the last time i towed it there the tow truck left lots of scratches on it.

Took the car into the dealer this morning at 9am. They didn't even diagnose the problem until 1:30pm... I was tired and pissed at this point. They informed me, as per the TSB (unsure of which one), they'd need to replace the Oil Control Valves, which would cost $631 (parts + labor). Drive the car for awhile to see if this makes the code disappear. If not, then opening up the front of the engine to check the timing. If nothing then, they would replace the ECM.

Does this sound correct? It's a bloody expensive endeavor and it'd be out of pocket as I'm being told my car is out of warranty due to mileage.

Am I wrong to assume this is not mechanical since my car seems to be idling and running perfectly smooth?

Lastly, if I choose to DIY the fix, or take it elsewhere, what should I have done to the car?

Thanks!

Mark

They are claiming it's Electrical and not covered.

Knowing which TSB would help determine what is being replaced/covered.

They didn't tell me which one they were using, but they stated they needed to replace the OCVs, then Check the Timing if that didn't correct it, and lastly the ECU

Got a call back and took him a couple days to get the part... just went in today .... (it was the OCV) pull out of the dealership to try and leave and check engine light comes back right back on..... now they want me to come back in 3 days to drop it off and have them "spend some time with it"..... im going to try and get ahold of an ecu and canbus computer b4 dropping it off, and see if that solves it... im not getting any of the signs that it is a mechanocal issue with the cam sproket... so hopfully its just one of the electrical issues that they havent tryed to address yet....

I'm a little lost now. Same day I took the car to the dealer, I filled up at the station on my way home from work. CEL disappeared. I figured it was a coincidence but it hasn't returned and I've put about 150 miles on it since the fill-up. I've driven city/highway and even hard on the throttle a few times too. Everything seems in order.

Also, per the dealer claim (unsure what TSB they were using) does it make sense for them to deny me the 60k power-train warranty? Stating it's an Electrical issue, and not covered. The Tech informed me, as per the TSB, he'd need to replace the OCVs, if that didn't work then open the cover to check the engine timing, and lastly the ECU.

Thanks!

Mark

Got P0016 on 3/21/17 at about 38k miles, did not notice other problems, engine seemed working fine. Took it to the dealer, they said Toyota was involved in diagnosing the problem and suggested to replace cam timing gear and ECU. Got the car back on 3/30/17, CEL gone. Drove it for a 3-hour trip from PA to OH, noticed white smoke from the hood, pulled over and found oil spilled underneath the engine on passenger side. Also spotted a metal piece lying on the engine cover with oil. Drove it to the nearest dealer (fortunately, it was only 15 minutes away), found a cracked valve cover...

The technician said that the issue was with the pins in the injector harness, they were not making a "good" connection.

Gumberculies, 2016 Subaru BRZ, 23,xxx, 6030XX, Been At the Dealership for 3 days (Sellers Subaru), Macomb, Michigan

Had the P000B fault code come on with the CEL and SL. This was also accompanied by the occasional rough idle/idle hunting and would extrememly rarely stall when pushing the clutch in.

This started happening about 6 days after I had installed my JDL UEL catless header. still not sure if that's why I'm experiencing this issue.

Got my BRZ back after a month of waiting. Had the stock header reinstalled and the only thing done to the car is a catback exhaust. 2 weeks after getting it back I had a P000B fault code again. Took it in and they diagnosed one of the OCVs as being bad. So they replaced it right there. Another 2 weeks later (today), the same issue is back.

If it wasn't a rocker arm, it is likely your cracked valve cover came from someone getting sealant into a "blind hole" of a valve cover bolt.

When the bolt was tightened, it created enough hydraulic pressure to snap off a chunk of the back side behind the end of the hole.

That part was eventually picked up by the cam and pushed through the valve cover.
