If you're new, don't worry about classing. Just focus on seat time.
You're in vancouver -- Bridge City Autosports has a driver skills clinic coming up on March 4th, and the Oregon region of SCCA has a starting line school the 18th of next month. There are facebook groups for both clubs, plus there is Northwest Autosports Association which basically just has fun-run weekends without classing. |

https://www.scca.com/pages/solo-cars-and-rules If you open Appendix A you can see what classes your car can run in, then you'd go to the appropriate section of the rules to see what's allowed and what isn't in Sections 13-18, on top of the other sections of the rulebook, they even reference each other for more headache and flipping back and forth. 86's can be classed into Street, Street Touring, and Street Prepared according to Appendix A. As before, ST only allows 9" wheels for an 86, Street Prepared allows for any size wheel, along with slicks, coilovers and a host of other things I didn't bother to read. SM allows for FI, bigass tires, crazy weight reduction, I link a thread down below but for this class people generally go hog wild. There's a shit-ton to figure out, but others are right, don't worry too much about the details and have a good time driving hard, you can get into the guts of the rules and building a car as you get more familiar with the way things work. Just ask your competitors in your class before you run. It's the polite thing to do and you'll make some new friends in the process.Quote:

I'll be at most of the Portland area events for the next 6 months so just come find me if you have questions at an event.

STX Rules and Setup Questions
Quote:
If you're new to AX and just running local events I'm sure they'll let you run STX for now, if you have future plans to get wheels that conform to STX. Especially since your tire size is STX compliant. It's not likely you'll beat any serious STX contenders if you're new. Seat time makes you faster than mods. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Wheels are unlimited in CSP, he can run there. It will be a marginally easier class than SM.

Just want to say thank you to everyone who replied! You guys are an awesome community. I won't be doing anything super competitive until the BRZ becomes my full weekend/track car. So I won't mind having my ass handed to me by cars fully built for that specific class. I just wanna go fast and learn to fully control the car. Thanks again!
Also thinking of buying this helmet: Bell Sport Mag, any thoughts on it? I think in an open face helmet it will be easier to hear the instructor. |

If that's the one that comes as an option for the school package, it's a nice helmet. My only advice would be to go see if you can try one on somewhere first. Different helmets have different shapes. The one I got from Starting Line is my typical size but it puts a bunch of pressure on my forehead. It's only a good deal if it fits well and is comfy!

I'll be at most of the PDX events in the north paddock but I won't run in the south paddock because of how rough it is. It's worth the drive out to dallesport a couple times this year as the events out there are basically pure practice weekends and not really competitive. Good for testing and tuning. Also, if you can make it to Packwood at all, those events tend to be much better. Big lot with faster speeds. |

Quick question, but what is the "legality" of using the sti/series blue skirts, lip, etc on a frs. I doubt anyone local would actually care to protest it but hypothetically if they did would they be right? Here's the rule itself and definition of model:
Addition of spoilers, splitters, rear wings, bumper covers, valances, side skirts, and non-functional sccops/vents is allowed provided that either: 1. It is a production part which is standard or optional equipment of a US model of the vehicle. (“Model” is defined in Section 12.) 2. It is listed in the vehicle manufacturer’s US accessory catalog for that vehicle for normal highway use. This does not allow for parts sold through a manufacturer’s performance catalog (e.g., Ford Racing, HPD, Mazdaspeed, Mopar Performance, Mugen, NISMO, SPT, TRD, etc). Parts must be installed as directed by the manufacturer. Exact replicas, including weight, from alternate sources are also permitted. model: A group of cars of a given make which have virtually identical bodies and chassis but are readily distinguished from other models of the same make by virtue of a major difference in body appearance and/or chassis design. The names by which the manufacturer designates these groups have no bearing on this definition even though two (2) groups may be designated identically The question is, since the brz and frs are basically the same car, do they fit the definition of "model" |

Thats a shame. Reps are cheap on ebay and provide some extra protection from cones with no real performance benefits.
