The peeling lead based paint off the crib was the least of the lead exposure, back on the farm.

In the summer, after the crops were laid by, it was time to paint the barns. My job, as a small child, was to mix up the paint. Yes, we formulated our own paint.

My grandfather showed me how. So many handfuls of pigment, so many handfuls of powdered lead and so many glugs of linseed oil per a 5 gallon bucket, then keep stirring till they needed it.

Get it ....... handfuls of powdered lead ........

.......and I turned out just fine .........

How do you get power into lead other than melting the core of a nuclear power plant built in the 50's?

Yep, I remember some kids in school, that would break open thermometers and pour the mercury into the pencil grove in the desk and play with it all day .....

And then we had asbestos in the old schools, sluffing off everywhere, lead soldiered water pipes, coal dust from the coal fired school furnaces and only the Lord knows what was in the food they served in the school cafeteria .....
