The other suggestion I have involves you living with it. Get a clear bra applied on that trunk opening. Would prevent cracking in the future and 'hide' the damage little bit.
Yes it does haha! Alright thanks - please do let me know.

If I file a claim my premiums will go up. I'm already paying almost 800 a month. I CANNOT afford anything higher.

He may not have been hit. I found almost identical cracks in front of my wing on top of my trunk the day I purchased my car when I got home. Shot my sales guy an email and got this "As you know, after polling Subaru customers, they decided to use recycled paint." They are going to fix it but it seems to be something every one should look out for.

Agreed. My son's 2002 Accord looks exactly like that where someone compressed the bumper in a parking lot by tapping him on the rear end.

Makes you long for the day of chrome bumpers that just bolted on....

I am skeptical of this.

Fixing this will cost less than your MONTHLY premium. Just take the cover off, take it to a body shop and have them repaint it. Or live with it and suck it up.

Still though... $800 a month? Stop driving and get rid of the car if your record is bad enough to have an insurance payment that high on a 'normal' car...

Correct. There is no "recylced paint". The plant in Indiana (a zero-landfill plant) captures overspray with water then filters the water to separate the chemicals and paint particles (no filters to replace). The gathered contaminates are taken to a company the separates them further and recycles what it can and disposes of the rest (catalytic-scrubbed incineration I believe).

No paint is reused.

I noticed that too in the last pic!

When I was looking at the FR-S this past weekend, there was a sticker on the driver side window that indicated the bumpers can withstand an impact of 2.5 mph.

That's pretty sad so this might have been the result of someone barely tapping your bumper.

Got to say, I was little taken aback by that price too. I'm literally paying 1/10th of that and I have two <25 drivers on my insurance.

That's the current standard to pass DOT inspection. There wasn't one for a while, but the price of repairing fender benders went through the roof. The CRX was the car cited as an example. Backing up into a concrete parking bollard at walking speed would cost $1500 in late 80s money to repair. So the NHTSA put a 5mph limit on our bumpers. (thus started the big bumper era of the late 80s and early 90s) Recently they dropped it to 2.5mph due to manufacturer complaints about appearance and construction costs. But cars still have to pass a 2.5mph test with little to no damage.

That's why we have such huge bumper beams compared to the JDM/EDM models. So if you get pissed about having to cut up your bumper beam to fit that FMIC, you can thank the government.

Ah, makes sense. Those bumper medic guys are making a killing.

I'm still waiting for NHTSA to conduct their crash tests on these cars. When I was looking at the FR-S, I was pushing on both the front and rear bumpers and seemed very loose to me; like there were missing the bottom support brackets.

Bumpers today are just flexible plastic skin over a steel bumper beam with a bit of styrofoam between. Impacts 2.5mph and below should just damage the styrofoam and the paint, making repairs inexpensive. Impacts above will damage the beam or more.
