The Auto in this car is actually a good transmission as it was meant to mimic a PDK system, while there's nothing like driving a manual (ive driven both) the auto using the gear shift on the center console gives a good feeling and gives the allusion of using a manual, i often find myself pressing the carpet forgetting i dont have a clutch. And if youre embarrassed like i was about having an automatic take the shift boot plate out and screw on the manual shift knob... They fit!

Two weekends ago I did my first HPDE event. There was a guy there who raced TTD in his manual FRS and he actually set the track record on Sunday while we were there. His only mods are suspension, tune on e85, Hoosier slicks and a drop in air filter. Anyway, we got to shootin the shit and I offered to let him test drive our auto on the track.
We went out with the HPDE4 group and tossed around for about 6-7 laps and he impressed the hell out of me seeing what our car can do basically stock except for our wheels and Michelin PSS.

To quote Hal in the pits after the session, "I wouldn't want to face one of our cars if it was built and had an auto - I couldn't be competitive against it."

I've driven the FRS in both MT and AT. While I am an MT kind of guy, I have to say that the FRS AT is one of the very best things about the car. In fact, I thought it was more impressive than the McLaren MP4-12C. And McLaren ain't exactly chopped liver.

It was not an easy choice deciding between a manual or automatic FRS. Im no stranger to a manual transmission as I already own a 2010 Subaru WRX 5speed manual. I love the FRS semi-automatic paddle shift cuz i get the best of both worlds. Especially in a busy city like mine traffic is ridicilous. My very first car was a twin turbo Nissan 300zx and that was 10 years ago. Today Im proud to say I own manual WRX and an automatic/paddle shift FRS. I love them both equally.

Read this post when I was researching on the FRS. Just wanted to say Ty to the OP for this, helped me decide, and I went with the MT along with my own personal preference.

I finished my first year with an auto Frs. I entered nearly 30 autox events last year. No regrets on the automatic. I feel it was an advantage in some situations. Coming out of tight slow corners, my frs would very quickly downshift momentarily and allow my rpms to get up to the powerband. More than once ,I got eye roles from purists with the auto tranny. I got a different look when I beat them by 10 places. I beat tons of porshes and lotus"s and bmws. I won street class with 2 clubs which means I beat a lot of Manuals. It's all personal preference. Concentrate on driving and enjoying whatever you have. Really the most important part of the car is the "nut" behind the wheel

I got the 2017 in the manual because of the red intake manifold #redmeansfaster. Actually I've driven a manual for the last 3 cars I've owned. So, I've come to absolutely love it. So, I wanted to keep it that way.

Still can't decide on AT or MT for your first FRS/BRZ? This may help...

Any mods on that A/T? Did you swap the 4.10 Drive for something higher like 4.3. I'm also entering my first year with my 15 FRS AT been looking at idea of swapping the 4.1 to 4.3
