I currently have a 2013 Scion FRS with 12000 miles and am seeing that my power train warranty maybe expiring later this year (08?2017). (second owner)
I am worried, seeing the fact that SOME people have gear grind / synchro issues (4th / 5th gear) with their current FRS and have been getting it replaced by the dealership, under warranty. Although my tranny / gearbox / synchro seems fine at this point. Seems like this issue usually occurs around 10k~20k? miles, if it was intended to occur. What would be the best alternative options if this occurs in the future without warranty? Are our cars (2013 model - first gen) prone to having the synchro/tranny issues?or is it just affecting a small sample of the population? If this happened to you, what route would you take? Take 3rd Party warranty? Is the BRZ tranny a direct fit in the FRS? Any alternative tranny swaps currently available? Please advise. Thank you! |

I would just take the monthly cost of a new warranty and start saving just in case. Used trannies are popping up left and right for fairly cheap. Brz/frs tranny is the same. No other direct swap replacements

The issues have popped up but all you hear are the guys that have them while the vast majority of owners that make up the group that don't have a problem remain silent. Reading about issues on the internet can be a bit of a trap. There can certainly be value in extended warranties but you have to read the fine print very carefully as many people find they don't cover the things yu would want them to cover.

Only 12,000 miles? Total for a 2013? Amazing.
I used to have an early 2013. Turned it in with 36,000 hard miles. Never had a single issue. To date ... I've never purchased an extended warranty on any vehicle I have ever owned. I've never regretted that decision.

My car is 2013, so I am a bit worried as well since it is first year production.
So i bought the extended warranty for 2k, 120k miles or 8 years. 0 deductible. If I dont use the warranty at the end of term, I get full refund. (But most likely wont...) If i were you, start saving $$ for it, but your car is pretty new for anything to fix right now. |

First off ......like they say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
With your car's relatively low mileage, there is a good chance it ain't gonna break as long as you have the car. After 12,000 miles, if it were going to break, it would most likely be showing symptoms by now. Like they say in the old country ...... "one can become insurance poor". humfrz |

I have no idea dude, you need to ask someone who work at toyota.
I bought it from toyota dealership, and they are offering everyone who purchase the car. They have 3 plans, mine was the cheapest one. They probably hoping the owner will forget about it, i mean its a pretty long time. |

I bought the extended that covers "bumper to bumper" for 7 years for $1000. That same dealer now has a 200k/20 yr powertrain warranty on all new/certified for nothing extra.
I've thought about trading in for a Toyota 86 to have that piece of mind. I'd lose some $ in trading in but 20 years is nuts. I only drive about 3-4k a year so I'd be getting the full benefit of that 200k/20 yr. If I didn't have the warranty I have now and that 200k/20 yr wasn't available to me, I'd do like others have said and just put away $50-100 a month for future issues. |

Yes, they do get to keep your money for 8 years ..... but, that would yield them less that $500 (modest interest, compounded) even if their wasn't any outlay for warranted work. Maybe that's why I ain't rich ...... ![]() humfrz |
