Was more like the rich MEN got autos and the paupers and women had to drive Standards wasn't it? That is why they were called standard and not manuals.

Although I have conditioned myself not to use the term "standard" on here ( I do slip once in a while) I frequently call it that when talking to people. The blank look on the face of anybody under about 50 when I say "oh ya it is a six speed standard" is priceless.

@Tcoat Is "Standard" a Canadian thing? I use it all the time and people know what I mean.

I've never referred to a car being manual until seeing it on this forum.

Europe calls it 'standard', suppose it came over with the French connection y'all had. US has called it Manual Transmission forever.

Nah it is what all manuals used to be called. Maybe certain crowds know it but I get a lot of "what?" when I use it.

I don't get a reaction at all...

Or, maybe I just don't notice and they figure out what the hell I mean.

Maybe its a "Southern" thing but they were referred to as standard here probably into the late 70s at least. Like @Tcoat, I still do it on occasion.

Nope. I am sure the old timer US crew will back me that it was a "standard" transmission until sometime in the late 70s or early 80s. Started changing when the autos became the norm and the MTs the option and just gradually fell out of use.

Edit: LOL See^^^^

Lewis Hamilton ordered a special edition Zonda (he's since crashed it- la vida loca!) with a manual transmission (they don't make Zondas with a MT, so it was a custom job at great cost). Here's what he said when asked why:
