Door speakers not working but the rears are

Hi guys,

Last Monday I picked up my beautiful new 2017 BRZ. I decided I wanted to upgrade the sound system, so I purchased a 4ch JL Audio amplifier along with some Pioneer door speakers and a Pioneer sub. The guy I had installing the equipment hooked up all the wiring and then an hour before the scheduled pickup time he called me and said that he couldn't get any sound to the door speakers, but the rears we're working. I'm taking it back in on Thursday because he said he needed to call around to find a solution and order in some parts. Have you guys got any suggestions as to what it could be? I have a brand new car, and no sound so it's really annoying me. I need help!

Thanks guys,
Matt

There are six channels coming out of the head unit, not four. You have two in the dash and two in the rear, which are powered by the head unit, and two in the doors, which are powered by the door amp right behind the back seat. He hooked up the dash and rear speakers and disconnected the door speakers. He may have used the door speaker outputs to provide signal for your sub. That's what I did for mine, but I tapped off the signal instead of rerouting it, so my door speakers still work.

Thank you for the reply! Because I know absolutely nothing about car audio, what would I have to do to so I can get sound out of these door speakers before I take it back.
Much appreciated thankyou

It depends on where the signal was disconnected. More than likely he disconnected it at the back of the head unit, not realizing that there are six instead of four. In which case, I would have him wire the 4ch amp to the front and rear and reconnect the door amp to power the doors.

You didn't mention what amp you're using to power your sub or how that amp is getting signal. It's possible that he used the door signal to provide signal to the sub. This thread has pics of how I piggybacked off of the door signal to get sub signal without interfering with the door speakers' operation.

That's how he left the Amp not too sure if that helps.
Probably just gonna leave it for him to work out on Thursday. Even though it's really bugging me

So he's running one pair of speakers and bridging channels 3 and 4 for the sub. Things I would want to ask:

1. Which pair of speakers is running off the amp, and why that pair but not either of the other two pairs? What were his plans for the other pairs?
2. Where are the RCAs coming from? He probably installed a line level converter so he could use RCAs. Which is fine, but where is the converter getting its signal from? That's probably what happened to your door speakers.

Right now you have seven total channels (three pairs of speakers and one sub) but only three amplified channels. There are a few ways to fix this. You could use this four channel amp for dash and rears, the OEM door amp for the doors, and get a sub amp just for the sub. This is no longer ideal because you replaced the 2 Ohm door speakers with 4 Ohm speakers, so the door amp will only be pushing half its power.

Alternately, I would consider just getting a second JL XD400/4 and getting rid of the OEM door amp. Use the current one for the doors and sub, like it is now, and use the new one in four channel mode for the dash and rear speakers. Then you'll have seven amplified channels. I would want all the channels from the head unit used though; not just two. Every output channel except the sub has its own discrete signal from the head unit.

I would also consider getting someone else to do the work. This should have been obvious to any decent audio installer and he should have pointed out the inherent flaws of three amplified channels in a seven channel system before ever starting.

What was the solution? This guy seems like kind of a hack... it's not that difficult to figure out what's going on, especially for somebody that does it for a living.

Something to do with the tweeters power the door woofers? When I took it back, he fixed it in half an hour said it was a silly little mistake. He said it was different to other cars, I genuinely think he came across a problem, but then again who knows he could've been a hack too. I'm from Australia so the audio system may be a little different, to my understanding the cars here don't have an amplifier in the back, everything goes in to the back of the head unit.

That would be awesome, but definitely wouldn't take 30 minutes. I think it would be kind of crazy that there isn't an amp in the AUS spec car. It makes a huge difference for sure... though I'm really looking forward to some point in the future where I can get rid of the stock speakers and head unit.

I'm curious to know how you like the sound stage of the coaxial speaker in the door. Did he leave the mid and tweet up top disconnected?

I've got to think the engineers did the best with what they had and if it all would have been better in the door then they would have put it there... there's plenty of room. When I finally get around to doing my speakers, I'm really leaning toward a 3-way component system to match what they have stock.
