There are winter tires out there focused more toward a very cold but not so icey/snowy climate. I have the Hankook Icept Evo 2, very good for the winters here in Kansas City. We may see 4 or 5 good snows but then its usually gone within a couple days and these perform very well in those conditions. When its dry and 40 or 50 out they do very well, similar to an all season. The thing is though it gets very cold here and can stay cold for a long time with little to no snow. Sometimes we will go a couple weeks at a time in the teens and even get below zero.

During this time of year there is nothing really going on to warrant me keeping the summer tires on. Its cold and crappy weather right now; no races, no car shows, or car meets. So no one is really going to care if you have a winter setup on. Better to be safer than sorry. That one time when the day before it was 40 degrees and drizzled but today it happens to be in the negatives and now everything is frozen and you have to get to work or the store. This happens a few times during the winter here. Not a lot of snow but that freezing rain or icy road ways when it gets cold.

That last thing you want is that one perfect storm situation and you have to drive on the cold icy roads and since you didn't swap them out you end up banging into another car or sliding into a pole or something.

Probably a lot of people too. I like how the tire and wheel forum is getting none of this. That forum is like a mix mash of weird crap I cannot decipher. Still probably should be there right?

The Tirerack guy is right, the Pirelli's are pretty much ideal for your use. I've got them on my Audi A4 and they've been great. They really don't feel like I'm driving on a winter tire (other than that I sized down 1"). I put Nokian Hakka R2's on the BRZ since I wanted a more snow specific tire for it (although at 40F on dry roads they're like driving on gum), but the Pirelli's were the other tire given serious consideration. Price difference between the two options was within $20 for the set of four.

Thank you. The part about temperature and summer tires is bang on. Despite over a decade of accident free driving, I had the hubris to try and drive the car home on the stock Michelins in 0 C during the rain. It did not end well.

If you live in a climate where it regularly drops below 0 every winter and you need to drive, then invest in winter tires. /end thread

All these things. If it gets cold out for a few months, buy a second set of wheels and some snow tyres. Changing them out yourself is super easy. Maybe get some nice wheels / tyres for summer, and then put some skinny snows on your stock wheels?

We had freezing rain a few weeks back in norther VA. I drove my car no issues in the ice with my new set of blizzak.
A co-worked ditched his AWD 4runner with all season tires and now has to buy a new OEM rim (about $500). I say my $700 were very well spent.
