I have a set of general Altimax arctics on our Forester. I think these are a good choice if you need dedicated snows. Price is typically reasonable too. I got to try them in snow and slushy stuff last year. They performed well.

Forgive me if this has been said. I've only read the op.
In the same tire, a shorter sidewall will have less ability to move and flex, and therefore act as if it were stiffer, giving the tire a propensity to break loose laterally, sooner than the tire with the taller sidewall. Shrinking the width also aids in cutting through the snow to the road surface underneath.
This usually realuts in a cheaper tire as well.

Before I go buy these because I haven't read any bad info about them and they're pretty damn cheap.

Has anyone tried evergreen ew66 215/45/17 ?
