The 86 is a "nicer" car, I'm not sure it's "better". I dearly loved the FR-S, same with the 86 now.
You are applying the US/Scion view to the 86 again. Remember that it was a Toyota ever where else all along. The changes that were made would still have happened if it was still a Scion. The changes had nothing to do with the rebadge.

Sound insulation from a FR-S to 86 seems to be a huge change. Did 86's everywhere else already have this? And don't forget you are dealing with US car buyers, not the brightest on the whole. See the use of the word "aggressive" around here.

There have been differences between markets since the beginning.

The European pre 2017 GT86 "High" and "Aero" specs had the exact same sound proofing and interior as the BRZ; except for the logos, speedo and dash panel colours, and headunits.

For 2017, the GT86 seems to be missing the leather/alcantara seats. Or that could be just the morons working at Toyota web marketing. I don't care enough to find out, my '13 still runs fine.

In around 2015 BRZ lost the alcantra option while GT86 kept it. I hoped that alcantra will be back, but now it seems more like the opposite.

You should pay less for a Toyota badge. Not that I personally care, but saying you drive a Subaru sounds better than a Toyota.

I haven't been to a Toyota dealer yet, but it does sound like marketing and advertising puff in that it's a 'different car' and it's own QA processes. I'm waiting to see the Blackline or TRD release before making my mind on which to get.
I wish I had remembered this when I was at the dealership, but with regards to Toyota having its own QA process, the BRZ actually has a better warranty - both are 3 years but the BRZ has either unlimited Ks/mileage or at least 10,000Ks more than the 86.

On a different note, it looks like I got the price of the BRZ wrong. The auto is actually, $38,220, not $36,160 - which is funny because when I posted yesterday I thought it was around $38 but I went to the Subaru website to get the exact price and it was $36K and I swear I double checked that it was Auto as I thought it was too low.

In any case, with the extra options (STI Boot Lip Spoiler, Alcantara with leather accents and heated front seats) to make it the same as the Toyota GTS the BRZ is still a fair but less than the Toyota - $40,812 (BRZ) to $43,081.

If anyone can comment about the BRZ not having a 'proper' spoiler and just the 'STI boot lip spoiler' let me know.

Only sounds better to mechanics because they hear dollar signs for head gasket and timing belt replacements (basically every non-turbo Subaru in the US market from 1998-2010 had chronic head gasket issues and timing belts with interference engines).

How much did you get the dealer to go down to for the GTS Auto? Under $42k?

When I said I wasn't going to be buying today he didn't seem keen to talk pricing but from his earlier comments it didn't sound like they'd even go close to a BRZ.

Yeah? Strange.
I like the Alcantara and leather in my GT86. Trading in for cheap fabric isn't very appealing.

yeah. In Germany there is around 2000 EUR semi-OEM option, when subaru germany somewhat can reupholster the interior for you.

So now I am curious.

Are all versions, brands and markets only available in fabric seats for the 2017 MY? (Excluding dealer installed options like the German example.)
And if so, what blithering idiot made that decision?

Sort of looks that way. Although parts of the Canadian ones are leather (like). Guess they used all the materials up on the dashes.

The one(s) trying to keep the car's base price from eclipsing $30,000 before the buyer slaps on every option available. They still want the car to compete on price, and a manual 86 I recently test drove (first one in the state, it seems) that just had all weather mats, wheel locks, and a spoiler was a few hundred dollars shy of $28k. Involve leather, and it's bound to get closer to 29. At that point, there are other cars more worth your money (not that that's going to stop someone who just wants an 86 more than anything else), making the shopping decision more difficult.

I think the change to removing the red inserts on the seats' bolstering and the red stitching throughout the interior is a pretty bad one. The interior is very dark now with the all the black all over the place and silver stitching. The red at least broke things up a bit and provided some contrast.

A whole lot of people hated the red stitching.
