A good deal of what I do involves checking numbers against what they should be so I guess I just automatically read the whole damn thing. I never realized I actually did it until just now with that joke. I read the whole number and then moved on to the punchline.

Environmental, health, safety and security manager for 4 automotive parts manufacturing plants. Mostly I allot funds and monitor budgets, review equipment and product designs to ensure compliance and function, develop and maintain policy and procedure and all that fun manager stuff. I have 8 engineers, 4 coordinators and 12 hourly techs that work for me across all the plants. This is why I always seem to have so much time since much of my day is waiting a few minutes here and there for people to come to meet with me (or on conference calls with the world wide team. Oh god the conference calls). I am not the guy that runs around and tells you to wear your safety glasses or say to fix things I have people for those tasks.

Many people think a factory is built, equipment is slapped in and then it stays that way for eternity. I can assure you that is not the case. A GOOD factory is constantly changing as tech and needs change. That is where I come in not the day to day stuff so much. Now, should one burst into flames or somebody get seriously injured THEN I get involved in it. I have been doing this for almost 30 years working from the floor "safety police" tasks, through project management and individual plant coordinator to where I am now.

My Dad has owned a small tool & die company since I was about 5. It's only a 6 person shop, but trust me I am well aware of how much maintenance and adaption is invloved in manufacturing even on a small scale. I can only imagine on a larger scale..

Holy shit, yeah we design the tooling so someone else can make the thousands or millions of parts. We try to bid ourselves out of making the stuff ourselves but sometimes they pay anyway..
