The cost of the 2017s is kinda weird, they're about 5-6 grand more than I paid for my 2015 (In 2014) with the same options.. I really don't see enough new stuff to justify that kind of a price hike.

Changing exchange rates most likely.

People bitched about Scion's Pure Price, monospec and other cost saving measures and now they will bitch about how much the cars cost as Toyotas. There were valid reasons why Scion could sell for less and those left with the badge. Just wait until they do a higher trim level and watch everybody scream. People that thought they were going to get the options the rest of the world has always had for Scion prices were living in a dream world.

Agreed 100%. Problem with today's buyer is that most of them equate money to the amount of luxury features while this car took alot of money to develop underlying components like engine, chassis, transmission etc. Scion, as a brand, was doing what it was supposed to do even though dealers were abusing the "pure pricing" policy and adding bunch of dealer fees on it. Now that they've added more features to it, price hike is not that much of a surprise and the commission base is also higher (quoted by my dealer), so more room for haggling if anything. I think they main argument against the toyota pricing is that you can get a BRZ Sport-tech/limited for additional $500 and that makes the pricing of toyota 86 a nonsense.

Nailed it right in the head.
For what the car comes with... which is nothing might I add... theres absolutely no reason why someone would buy the 86 this model year over the BRZ.
Heck, one is better off buying a '16.

I'm a sucker for "new" though. Anything that flashes and has new bright lights i'd buy.
If i would have been able to get the new 86 30k OTD though, that would have been a different story.

Does Subaru and Toyota still have the agreement in place that Toyota will be able to sell 10 for every BRZ purchased? If that's the case, I imagine the OTD prices will naturally change to reflect that.

That "agreement" is more internet myth than a documented fact. The ratio is of course planned and agreed to but nobody is privy to what the actual agreement is.
Regardless of any such agreement Toyota will sell far more cars than Subaru simply because they have a vastly larger dealer base and infrastructure. There are 285 Toyota dealers in Canada vs 90 Subaru. Even if each dealer sold one car Toyota would have almost 3 times the sales.
I for one am baffled by the huge increase in the price of the still monospec 86. It would make sense if they had upped the options but they did not. The BRZ is currently the best bang for the buck by far and I don't see the 86 changing in price to compete any time soon.

My dealer called me last week with some good news...

We have a special edition 86 coming to Canada in the next month or two - more options and a true comparison with features to that of the sport tech BRZ.

Trying to get my hands on some pictures.

- Dual Climate Control
- Heated Seats
- Leather trim seats (Alcantara perhaps?)
- 4.2 inch TFT screen with vehicle performance data
- Leather wrapped parking brake
- Smart Key system
- Push Start
- 17" Super Black High Luster Wheels (Same as the Inazuma Edition BRZ?)
- Fog Lamps
- Rear Spoiler
- Only available in M/T

Apparently it will be only available in white and orange in colour...

Dunno why the dealers do this. Limited colour special editions that are actually just normal elsewhere.

IE. The performance package (available in the states) for the BRZ in Canada is the Inazuma Edition that only comes in yellow, aka. a yellow coloured performance package BRZ, aka the series yellow.

Just weird.

Better solution:

Buy 86 or BRZ from a dealer cool enough to let you bundle mods into your financing. 2k for big brakes, 3k for coilovers, 1k for exhaust is a better performance package than a factory optioned performance package.
