Which (if any) FI kits included unlocked base maps?

I understand that most Ecutek tuners choose to lock their maps to protect their work/IP. However, many kits seem to include a base map that has presumably not been particularly optimized for any one car and is to be used as a safe starting point. Are any of these base maps provided unlocked so a tuner can avoid starting from a clean slate? If not, then what's the purpose? I know some of the early OFT tunes for the SBD turbo kit and the Vortech SC kit are out "in the wild" but are any of the other tunes provided by manufacturers such as Harrop, Edlebrock, Treadstone, Jackson, Greddy, Cosworth, etc... provided in unlocked "base map" form?

Thanks!
-Matt

Ya good luck with that. Youll have to start your own map or hack someone elses. Google it

As far as I know HRI tuning is the only guy that will give you your ROM unlocked. That's pretty fucking rad of him. I always worry if my tuner's business goes under than I'm going to be fucked and have to shell out again.

I'm not talking about a tuning company leaving a tune unlocked... I'm talking about the base tune that comes from the kit manufacturer. You would think they would be motivated to make it as easy as possible for people to buy and install their product.

When carb exemption comes into play, they don't want you mucking around with the tune. Different companies/kits will have different motivations/target buyers. The easiest way is to flash a tune and go. Others who are more experienced may just make a tune from scratch off the stock tune.

Easiest as possible for most people means flashing a tune and driving the car, while being carb exempt for any emissions purposes

Pretty sure the SBD Speed by Design turbo kits come with open base map if you buy the kit

either oft base map or Ecutek base map (I believe HRI supply the ecutek base maps)

OFT guys will supply Vortech SC base map (open map) if you buy their kit

That likely it unless you find a tuner that supplied open maps, other than OFT guys or HRI tuning they are pretty few and far between

Not that I know of unless it's different in the states vs UK.

Try and see it from the manufacturer's point of view

I we sent out the tune unlocked then in moments its hard won contents would be all over the net

also
there's no way of showing what map was running in the car when it goes pop ( not that I know of anyway)
so if we supply an unlocked tune and the customer thinks I'll just bump up the spark a bit because of my 'special' exhaust and the engine then det's itself to death
said punter then flashes the car back to the original tune and says nothing to do with me , its your rubbish tune that blew my engine - I want a sack of cash in recompense

now I'm not saying that you or anyone else would actually do this but it only takes 1 to spoil it for the rest
