Just threw on the lollipop ROM from XDA, and it sounds amazing now. Audio quality has really improved. Only issue is that I don't have the element option in the settings menu.
Now that I'm running 5.1 the EQ settings for play music are available too. Runs a bit slower than KitKat ROM, but audio and functionality improvements are worth it.
Edit: thanks to some one over on XDA, I got the element feature back.

Has anyone rooted the lollipop unit yet?

Apparently you can just enter this code in the factory settings: *#hct#root# and then install SuperSU. That sounds too easy, and I don't feel like being the guinea pig.

I'm getting ready to attempt this. The desired end result is an Android head unit with a backup camera while retaining the OEM inputs, so I'm looking at:

Head unit: Joying JY-TL123
(going with this one because of the CD/DVD drive...yeah, I'm old)

Harness to retain OEM USB port: Axxess AX-TOYUSB

Harness to retain OEM AUX port: Axxess AX-TOY28SWC

Antenna adapter: Metra 40-LX11

OBD2 splitter so the HU and ScanGauge can be connected at the same time: Obd2 Splitter Extension Cable Male to Dual Female Y
(this is the third car I've had my ScanGauge in and I'm used to it being there...don't want to get rid of it)

OBD2 to HU via USB: ScanTool 425801 OBDLink SX USB
(I always go with a wired option over wireless when viable, so for me this is preferable over bluetooth)

Backup camera: Esky EC170-06

After reading many many posts I'm pretty sure this is all of the correct stuff, but I just want to make sure before ordering all of it...if any of this is wrong or not needed please let me know!

If things work out in the usual way I'll get 1/3 to 1/2 way through then say "ugh fuck this" and wind up taking it somewhere to be finished

The OEM two piece dash Panel covering the Headunit keeps coming off near the driver side. This HU seems to be just a little big on that side for some weird reason. Does this happen for anybody else?

Was it hard to put back on? Mine was like that and kept popping forward. So I removed the piece and loosened the top two bolts holding the HU a little. This allowed the unit to lower a bit causing the dash piece to fit easier and pop out less on that driver side. Worked for me anyway.

Oh so loosening up the screws a little allows it to "set" in place. Interesting , I will try that.

Are you referring to the screws holding the bracket on to the car or the screws holding the HU to the bracket?

I'm referring to the bolts holding the bracket to the car. The 10mm hex bolts I think it was.

^^ Haha wow cant believe that little trick worked , I was considering Sanding the inner edges a bit to let the Panel fit. This is so much simpler. Thanks dude.

The inbuilt mic has become super bad now. How is the external wired mic that comes with the unit? Any good?

Or should i get a better mid from amazon or something? Dont wanna run the wires and stuff and then find out it sucks after a few days of use. Also do i have to change any settings to get it working?

I've never used the inbuilt mic, didn't know it had one before so I've only used the wired mic it came with. Lol. Works well, just be sure to plug it in all the way. When I first installed it, I only halfway plugged it in thinking it was all the way. Needless to say it didn't work well half way in. Haha.

I've mounted it in front of me by the dash cluster but didn't like seeing it. So I ran it straight down into the cubby next to the usb/aux input. I made a hole in the top of the inside of the cubby to do so. Works fine there too. Haven't had any voice quality complaints from the other end of any phone calls.
